Quick-thinking 11-year-old grabs wheel, steers vehicle into bridge pillar
CLEVELAND - Rolling downhill in a bus with his screaming classmates and no driver, a fast-acting 11-year-old jumped behind the wheel Monday and steered the bus into a pillar, stopping it from careening out of control.
Some children jumped out the side door and rolled into the street. The driver, Michael Weir, had stopped for fuel and was in the station's restroom when the bus started to roll with 27 children aboard.

Guess what........Driver not registered
Weir, 57, has a valid commercial driver's license but wasn't registered with the state as required, police said.
Ohio bus drivers must obtain a state license certification every six years that includes a criminal background check and a review of their driving record, education department spokeswoman Karla Carruthers said.

OMG that could have been an absolute nightmare. What a brave little 11 yr old. Has this guy never heard of a 'hand brake'? It is typical that he isn't registered, it seems to be happening more and more often. I would have thought that it would be safer anyway to refuel the bus when there aren't any kids on board, like before you pick them up? Imagine if something had gone wrong with the pump and there was an explosion or something like that. I bet he won't be re-employed there! Anyway, he shouldn't have left 27 kids unattended :(
Anyway, it was a happy ending and I hope the kid gets some recognition for his bravery!

Yes a very brave child and his parents should be very proud of him.
I always thought filling the bus with gas would be done before picking up kids too, guess he wasn't thinkint he needed it?! Don't know, but he should be punished in some way for leaving that many kids unattended.

Poor children, I fell sorry for them. This will haunt them for awhile. Thank God for the quick action of the 11 year old. This could have worst than it was. I can smell a big lawsuit againt the driver and the school corporation. It is the job of the school corporation to make sure their drivers are legal.

I totally agree with you on that! Unfortunately, I am sure they will do something to prevent a law suit though
