question for trained typists...

One thing I am trying to use myLot for is to improve my typing skills...they are quite lacking. I have noticed I always use my right thumb for the space bar and I have a terrible habit of hitting it before I type the last letter of the word so I have to go back and fix the two words I mess up by doing that. Is hitting the space bar with my right hand proper technique? Should I be using my left? both? It depend? on what? I am sure I knew this at one time...but just can't remember and really want to practice properly.

You're doing it correctly by using the right thumb for the space bar (unless lefties were taught to use the left one, I don't know). I wonder why you hit it before finishing the word? Computers have made my typing get really sloppy. I'm still pretty fast (80+ wpm, I think), but I tend to not pay attention to what I'm doing and hit that 'send' button without thinking. Sure has got me in trouble more than once ... (And sure, you might be able to convince your husband that you're here to improve your typing skills - aha ... I ain't buying it)

My husband has no idea what I do on the computer. lol. I want to start taking my writing a little more serious but that is alot of typing so I better get better at it! Also, some part-time jobs I am considering require decent typing skills. 80 wpm- sounds great to me!!

I took a typing class back in high school and failed miserably. However, when I started learning to use a pc I taught myself to type by chatting. I've actually gotten pretty good though I still need some work on my numbers. I use my right hand thumb to hit the spacebar and it works for me. I'd just suggest slowing down and practicing constantly until you train yourself not to hit the spacebar until your done typing. Good luck with it!! Hi. I also use myLot to hone an enhance my typing skills. I really dont have any typing lessons and have just learned through the years. I still type a little bit slow coz i tend to type letters in their mixed up order and go back to edit them. I am now trying to use and find typing tutor in the web and some have given me help. Well, I dont hit the space bar with my thumb so I guess I have a lot more learning to do. But I can at a times type without looking at the keyboard. At least I learn that I should use the thumb to hit the spacebar. But I guess old habits are hard to unlearn.

Hi. Yes, using the thumb of your right hand for the space bar is the the proper way to type as taught in typing class. However, it really makes no difference. If you are left-handed using your left thumb can make it much easier to type with fewer problems since the space bar is used so often. So just use whichever one is most comfortable for you and it will be fine.
