I dont know what to do |
|
I have a 1 1/2 year old female pit. She is a brendal. Well lately she has been playing outside with my other dog which is a little weenie dog. Well they usually get along great but lately my pit has been sticking the little dogs head in her mouth. i dont know what to do about it because i dont want her to get really aggressive towards my little dog. When i see her do it i like spank her (not hard) and tell her no. but it just seems to keep going on . What should i do about this so nothing bad happens?

1. jillbeth (2022) | 7 months ago | Sounds like she is just trying to play, but I can understand why you would be worried. It might be a good idea to only let them play together when you can supervise them. You might try giving her a squirt of water in the face or some other unpleasant experience (besides spanking, which apparently isn't going to work) when she does this.

| 2. carpenter81 (12) | 7 months ago | I have a pit and a jack russel. When the pit starts to play too rough I spray her with water from a squirt bottle. Since she doesn't like water this works well.

3. Irishfrndly65 (2772) | 7 months ago | Is the weenie dog a "nipper"? The behaviour you are describing, from your pit, is what a mother dog does to reprimand a puppy. She will take the pups head in her mouth. It's scary looking, I know. The monitored play and squirt bottle are good advice. You can also put something unpleasant in the water bottle, for example apple cider vinegar, or plain white vinegar might work. It will sting the eyes but shouldn't cause any harm. When you reprimand the pit, use the deepest voice you can manage, and a higher pleasant voice for praise. Hope that helps, I bet she's a great dog!

Irishfrndly65 (2772) | 7 months ago | Good luck. My brother has had pits for years and he recommends not hitting them, unless it's a 'fingerslap' across the top of the muzzle, with the deep voiced "NO". It's hard when they are doing something instinctual and you are freaked out about it. LOL! My dog just killed a baby bunny, I was so upset and my husband says, "that's what dogs DO!" ARRGHHH! I know, but I don't have to LIKE it! LOL!

jamie08 (250) | 7 months ago | see i used to own a heifer and when she acted up i would always take the end of the lead and hit her across the nose. But that doesnt work with my pit. my boyfriend goes out there and play rough with her also. when he does it he like pushes her around and everything and she snips and stuff. the other night i went outside to play with her and i had her toy and i went to turn around to throw it and she jumped up and bit me on the back of my arm! i just dropped the toy and sat down to watche her play with my little dog again

Irishfrndly65 (2772) | 7 months ago | I was talking to my brother about your problem, he said that pits MUST know who is boss. There HAS to be a alpha person that they KNOW is above them on the ladder. It's just going to take a lot of diligence and training on your part, while she's still young. Good Luck!

| 5. Gwatson (41) | 6 months ago | It seems like play behavior to me. Did she grow up with your other dog? She could be trying to tell the little dog to stop nipping so much! Clearly, tapping her to get her attention isn't working. Remember, Pit Bulls have a pretty high pain tolerance. I use a spray bottle or one of those Gatorade sports bottles that have a spout. Coupled with a firm "No!" this works miracles on my Pit Bull! He has an annoying (funny) habit of licking the cats all over. This results in the cats double teaming him and kicking his butt, which, I've recently discovered, he absolutely loves! I spray all three of them with cold tap water, though, to keep him from getting his eyes scratched out. End of boxing match!

6. danishcanadian (14632) | 5 months ago | If I were you, I would keep the two dogs away from eachoher. I am not sure how one would actually get the dog to stop this behaviour, but i the dogs are not allowed to be together, then the big dog can't hurt the little one.

| 7. subielover (1) | 5 months ago | I'm an owner of many pits and I'm sure she does not mean any harm (play). If you want to control it just continue with telling her no (do not hit her unless necessary this will create jealousy) If she does not listen say no and move her away play is over. This way she learns to play nice or no play. Pit bulls are personalised dogs so they get attached to one owner and can become very possessive.

8. anawar (1084) | 5 months ago | Please don't ever hit a pitbull. These dogs require special handling. There's plenty of information to read and learn about these fascinating dogs. Please understand the plight of a pit. They do have the ability to fight and kill. They can also be gentle and loving. Do not ever put two male dogs together. My son had two pits. Sparing all details, the two dogs were let out together, and one killed the other in a battle that raged over 45 minutes. No one could separate the dogs. Sad and tragic, Please be careful and educated if you want to keep your pit and other dogs and people safe. I'm not saying pits are killers, but they do kill on occassion. Owning a pit involves dedication, patience and kindness. Take care of your family, your dog and everyone you know by learning to be a responsible owner.

anawar (1084) | 5 months ago | It sounds like I really stepped on your toes! Sorry if I came on too strong. All I could think about was my son's dogs and maybe my emotions took control of my words. I've learned so much and I worry that if I don't leave words of caution when I read stories about pits, something might happen and I could have prevented it. If my words don't fit your situation, maybe someone else who comes across this discussion will benefit from my remarks. Please excuse me if I implied there was anything lacking in your personal handling of your dog.

| phoenix_risin (59) | 3 weeks ago | I do not think Anwar was calling you irresponsible or being mean. I think that you may have taken it the wrong way. Anwar and the poster above brought up a great point though Never hit the dog even lightly and spray bottles are not all that helpful either. You need to take the time and get the dog into basic training and teach the dog to obey certain commands. In this situation certain commands like settle and leave it could be really helpful. I have worked with many problem and rescued pit bulls and believe me nothing can take the place of training and Pit bulls Love it As the breed really loves making you happy and this gives them that chance. Another thing Never leat them play alone without someone with them. No pit Bull should be left unsupervised. Nopt because they may just attack but because they can tend to get rough with a smaller dog and they need someone there to tell them when that time has come. Also making sure to correct the small dogs nipping is important so traing would be best for both and you as a owner can also learn a lot more.
