One of my most unforgettable experience in college was when i became a volunteer for a foundation who caters special children here in the Philippines... Initially, my intention was just to have the experience credited to my on the job training for SPED because I was in my senior year as Psychology student at that time.. But things turned out differently when I started to be involved in the activities with the children, like the 10 day summer camp held in a remote area in Pangasinan.. That was so memorable and an amazing experience for me...I had been assigned to be the BIG SISTER (guardian) of two special children, one boy and a girl ( who are both mentally retarded and abused violently and sexually during their childhood).. Being their guardian, I've learned not only to protect the kids but also understand and love them for who they are and what little capabilities they have... Both of them had a great time in the games and other activities provided to them..this is the only time they could go outside and mingle with other special children from various NGOs and even with normal people altogether that's why they really did enjoy that SUmmer Camp.. They were given opportunities to be just like normal kids, play, sing, dance, act...share their talents and enjoy every moment with other people.. The experience had totally changed my perspective in life...that I now learned to love LIFE as how it was given to me and to thank for all the blessings that I have received.. I'd like to share with you this wonderful message.. Special Child. Please accept me as I am. Do not ask me to excel intellectually or athletically. Love me, teach me, discipline me but please don't pity me. Believe that my life can bring honor to GOD in a unique way. My weakness will demonstrate the power of GOD. Look at me through eyes of LOVE. See my gifts as well as my limitations. Rejoice with me in each step I take But do not compare the size of my steps to those of other children. Do not face me into a mold that just will not fit. Remember, tell me of GOD's love. Help me to meet and know and love GOD. - Anonymous -

This is a lovely story, thank you for sharing this with us. I think these children with special needs are generally full of love and just love to give love. They don't ask for very much other than a little bit of attention. You have done a wonderful thing, giving your time and love to these special children. What a lovely memory!
