If I remember correctly, my first kid ate cereal at 6 months. I also remember reading about signs to look for when your baby is ready. Our second son seems to show all signs of being ready to have something more than milk. We are planning to give him cereal and avocado when he is 4.5 month, on his older brother's birthday. I have time to read more about this before we actually do it.

My doctor had me start feeding my babies rice cereal when they turned 4 months old. Your start out making it really thin and then eventually thicken it up a little at a time. My doctor suggested starting solid baby food not to long after that but only one kind at a time to watch for allergies.

I think moms/parents have different decision on feeding solids to their babies. MOstly even doctors says that it is best to feed baby on solid during his/her 6 months. Because according to doctors during the 6th months babies intestines are more develop and are ready for solids. OTher do this when they have notice the signs when baby is ready like what you were saying. My baby started to eat cereal during her 5th month. Although she is taking cereal we still make sure that she still gets enough nutrients and she still drinks her milk regularly. Since according to her pedia, the nutrients she needed is on her milk. So my advice is when you start solids on your baby better be sure she/he still gets enough nutrients she/he needs. Goodluck!
