His family moved to Tijuana where he started performing in clubs. In the early 60s they moved to San Francisco. In 1966 he was one of the founders of the Santana Blues Band which was later changed to SANTANA. He debuted at the Fillmore West Theatre in San Francisco on June 16, 1968.
