How to make my daughter's hair grow faster? email this discussion to a friend?

My baby daughter's hair is growing very slowly, slower than a snail's pace. Her hair is also very wispy. While other girls her age could tie up their hair in a ponytail, her hair has not grown up to her eyebrows yet. What can I do to make her hair grow thicker and longer faster?

I don't know if there is anything that would work. I would love to know of something to make hair longer and thicker, I would use it on myself. If you find anything, please share!

Let's see if there's any suggestions by other Mylotters.

My Little girl is three and 9 months, she hardly has any hair, its very fine, sandy colour. It is very slow at growing,When she was three,I started taking more concern about it,like us mams do,espcially when her hat blew off one day when getting off the bus,and little boy shouted she's lost her hair as well as her hat!
ive tried hair thickening advised by a friend.Alot say it will grow in its own time, and will grow in more thicker.

That is also my problem with my baby's hair. I've tried putting aloe vera extract on her scalp although it helps her grow some hair but still its thin and growing slow. I also got an advice to put a virgin coconut oil on her scalp but I haven't tried it. Another is they told me to use a shampoo that horses used. LOL I wouldn;t like to try this some says its effective.

myLot reputation of 97/100. SydneyHazelton (1498)   ranked 493 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

Shampoo for horses? I don't think I will try that. Don't know what toxic ingredients are in the shampoo! Anyway, will try the aloe extract and virgin coconut oil thingy. Thanks for sharing!

Hey syd, hi there! I've heard about that shampoo. In fact, I've tried it. It's not as scary as it sounds.=) It makes the hair grow faster. It's the Mane n' Tail. I think. It's for human use and can be for animals like horses.=)

sunshine831 (1)  6 months ago

The shampoo is called "Mane and Tail" and it doesn't feel any different than shampooing with regular shampoo. My mom used it on me all the time when I was a little girl. It doesn't hurt your hair at all. As a little girl my hair was super long and really thick. I have not used it in years and my hair is thinner now, but still really thick.

Hi,
If you get good quality coconut oil, then heat it slightly and massage it on the head. Make sure that the oil touches the scalp. Do this oil massage atleast every alternate day. On other days just apply oil on her head. But at the same time take little oil both for oil massage and daily application. Other wise the face will get more oily look.

If you get curry leaves in your area, grind them into a fine paste and apply it on her hair and leave it for a few mins and wash it thoroughly, you could do this once in a week. The curry leaves can also be eaten raw. Wash it and ask her to eat a few leaves raw. This will also help a lot.

myLot reputation of 97/100. SydneyHazelton (1498)   ranked 493 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

Thank you for your suggestion. I will try get some coconut oil and curry leaves. But I don't think my daughter can chew it yet. She's just 15 months...

myLot reputation of 89/100. Swaana (1083)   ranked 1,340 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

If she cant chew it, forget that part. But still you could grind it and apply it on her hair. This will give you the desired result.

Increase blood flow by gently massaging the scalp. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and plenty of protein. Soy (ie., tofu) and a variety of beans is a good source of protein. Drink plenty of water. Stay away from drugs and alcohol. Keep a healthy diet. This regimen should be followed for several months as hair only grows approx. One-half inch per month. Do not comb or brush hair when wet as this causes breakage. If hair has been damaged, (perm or coloring) use a good conditioner. Try to air dry versus using a blowdryer.Comb your hair so many times if you have time to do so.

myLot reputation of 97/100. SydneyHazelton (1498)   ranked 493 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

Thank your for your suggestion! Will take note about the tofu and plenty of water. My 15-month old daughter doesn't take drugs or take alcohol, so no problem there. We have also never used the blowdryer on her hair. Since her hair is so thin. After a gentle wipe after her shower, it will already be dry. Will do more massage and remember not to comb her hair after bath.

myLot reputation of 83/100. alexigne (648)   ranked 2,593 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

Well that was applicable to all.It seems that we have the same case on daughter's hair.
My daughter is just like your daughter at first. I massage her scalp before taking bath with oil, first i use home made coconut oil but because of its smell i change it to ordinary baby oil. I always comb her hair while dry. By the way my kid is 22 moths old now and her hair is too different where i thought it won't grow so i find it really helpful.

I had the same kind of thing with my daughter, and I don't think you can do anything but relax, and know her hair will come in.

My daughter had a kind of blond/almost-bald thing for a long time. I had her in a shopping cart one day, and some lady patted my shoulder, laughing very hard. She said, "OMG, I thought you had a Cabbage Patch Doll there."
That was when my daughter was about a year old. It didn't get much better the next year, although she wasn't as bald looking when she was two. She had "baby hair".

My plan was to put her in dancing school when she was three, and the year she was two I went to another child's dance recital. I was sitting there, imagining how my little girl would be in a recital next year, and thinking about how none of the little girls were (essentially) bald!!!

Well, by the time my little girl entered dancing school at 3 years old she had "regular" hair - not long hair down her back, but long enough to be shoulder length. By the time the recital came I was able to do a cute little up-do thing.

You know what, though? When my daughter was under three and had that wispy gold hair it just looked like she had shorter hair. She was kind of elegant and chic in her own way. Don't worry about who can tie their hair up.

My daughter went on to have beautiful, shampoo-ad, hair by the time she got to be four or so. (And every year when I do her hair for those dance recitals I'd have trouble getting all her thick hair into the elastics.)

Just an afterthought:

They get the hair they inherit. My daughter got my coloring and hair, and her brother got his father's thick, dark, hair.

Lucky for my daughter, though, her father's genes must have kicked in somewhere; because her hair did get thick later, while mine has remained a giant problem for me for my whole life (but let me make it clear I don't look the least bit bald; the hair looks normal - it's just hard to manage).

On the bright side, there is something to be said for sparse eyebrows.

myLot reputation of 97/100. SydneyHazelton (1498)   ranked 493 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

Thank you for your comforting words! I was just wondering whether I should just let it be and let it grow on its own. People keep asking whether I have a boy! The I will laugh and say that she's a girl. I tell them her hair grows slowly. I guess you're right about the genetics bit because both me and my husband has thin hair when we were babies. I hope my daughter is not doubly hit by our genes!

myLot reputation of 91/100. LisaHW (1509)   ranked 1,079 out of 6,473 in mother  2 years ago

You have to hope there are some thick-haired folks in the ancestry somewhere, I guess.

There are some good things about skimpy hair, though:

It dries really quickly. You can leave the house with it wet, and it dries before you get wherever you're going.

It tends to have a good shine.

It's cool in Summer.

It doesn't use up a lot of shampoo.

You cut it in three clips of the scissors - one for the side, one for the back, and one for the other side.

If you wear earrings they show up even if you wear your hair over your ears.

It tends to have enough static electricity to make your touch a painful weapon if necessary.

Your combs and brushes stay cleaner longer.

It won't allow you to make a fashion mistakes with hair jewelry because everything you try to decorate it with just falls out anyway.

It's so light you can glue it into the appearance of being thicker with cheap hair spray.

You don't need to worry that you'll ever look just like everybody else because nobody else seems to have the kind of hair you have.

On windy days you get to have a new, unique, hairdo that nobody on God's green Earth has ever seen before.

On humid days your sweat soaks the skimpy hair, which makes slicking it back to a cooler style very easy.

When you get to be middle-aged people tend to still think you're younger because no middle-aged person on God's green Earth has hair like that.

My baby boy has less hair. He is 4 months old. I Have tried the coconut oil stuff and his hair has not grown thick. I would shave his head once to see uniform and thick hair growth.

My daughter had/has the same problem. She is now 8 years old, her hair has not grown hardly at all in the last 6 years. A couple of people including my Dermatologist suggested that she have her iron checked. He said that if she is anemic, that the hair will grow, but will continue to break, which seems like it is not growing at all. I had her tested, she was mildly anemic and we fixed that. I read a medical article that your body needs Silicon, so a few months back I went to the herb store, talked to them and got some Silica. It is actually working some. I talked to my doctor, and the dosage for her (8 yr. 52 lbs) is 1 capsule 3 times a day. The only problem is I can't really do it 3 times a day since she is in school. So I definitely do the mornings, and try to remember the evenings.

I am going to the doctor again tomorrow, there has to be a medical reason. My sister who is a Nurse Pract. suggested seeing a Pediatric Endocrinologist. I need a referral from my doctor to get in though. I guess that they run a series of tests to see if there are any medical conditions.

robynkudo (1)  4 weeks ago

My daughter is 4 now and she still has little hair. Everyone always tells me it will grow in time but she is getting much older now so I wonder too if maybe it is something medical. As for the 14 month old though I wouldn't worry about that. I know there are a lot of kids whose hair just doesn't start growing until they are older. Plenty even into the 3 year old range. Good luck!
