Possible Disaster In The Making: A Year Has Passed Since Virginia Tech Massacre |
| |
| It's been a whole year since the Virginia Tech massacre, where one emotional disturbed student opened fire leaving 33 students dead and then he killed himself. Ever since that disaster, the worst in US history however, there is a movement to allow people, both students and teachers, but particularly students to carry guns while on campus Here's one article about this (Quote) ..."Students Make a Case for Carrying Guns to School Virginia Tech students Mario Tama The Bryant Park Project, March 19, 2008 · After deadly shootings at schools in Illinois and Virginia, 12 states are considering legislation to allow guns on college campuses. Stephen Feltoon, a director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC), is part of a movement that says college students should have the same gun ownership rights as others. Feltoon says he purchased his first gun for recreation. "Now I own it for defense," he says. "I can take a firearm anywhere that's not a college campus, or any business that posts a 'no gun' sign. When am I carrying it? That's the beauty of conceal and carry. You'll never know until I need it."He says SCCC started a day after the Virginia Tech shootings and that when he first learned of the group, he signed on immediately. "I believed that my right to self-defense was being infringed on college campuses," he says. "College campuses are vulnerable and I didn't want to be defenseless." Feltoon says Virginia Tech is home to the SCCC's largest group of conceal and carry advocates. As for the SCCC's total enrollment, Feltoon says it has doubled in the last month, bringing the total to 22,000 members just one year after its founding."The Illinois shooting made people realize college campuses aren't as safe as administrators would have them believe," Feltoon says, explaining the recent jump in members. Feltoon says the group's core mission is simple: "We're pushing universities to allow law-abiding citizen to carry guns on college campuses, just as you would into malls and movie theaters."Feltoon says most SCCC members are men and women over 21 years old who already have licenses to carry a gun. "We're just asking for them to carry guns to one more location," he says. Beginning on April 21, Feltoon says, 3,000 SCCC members have pledged to visit college campuses wearing an empty holster to indicate that, because of state or school policy, when they reach campus, they're obliged — for now — to leave their guns behind...." http://www.npr.org/templa... Here's the link for the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus itself http://concealedcampus.org/ Uh...sorry, isn't this a disaster in the making if students are allowed to carry guns on campus? I mean it's been bad enough that in recent years, that emotional disturbed students go berserk and bring in firearms and start shooting their fellow classmates, but to openly suggest the idea that students be allowed to carry guns?? Like WTF??What are your feelings about this? | | | | | |

| | That will cause more issues as kids and teachers will not feel as safe. I know I wouldnt feel safe knowimg anyone next to me could have a gun. I know the people who go about it legally arent the ones to shot people whatever it will make things hard are the schools gonna start checking for your gun licence probably not. Guns are best kept out of schools. | | | | | | |

| | I know if I were a student it would give me the absolute creeps to think some of my classmates were carrying around guns on them...yes, can't agree more that guns should definitely be kept out of schools | | | |

| | A person that could've had a conceal gun at VT could've ended the shooting with one bullet. Just to let you know - a student was arrested yesterday in Austin for carring a gun on campus - and the police was alerted because he had pictures of himself with a gun on MySpace | | | | | | |

| | What is the deal here that these morons actually "advertise" themselves on places like MySpace...almost all these students that wound up murdering fellow students had posts of themselves on MySpace or sites like it--glad they caught him though | | | |

| | Yes it almost does sound like we're still living in the days of the wild, wild west--too many risks involved with kids carrying guns on school grounds...after all, accidents do happen where there are guns | | | |

| | I know these students want to carry arms to help protect themselves and other student's in case another shooting incident happens. But I feel the ones who want to carry arms should have to have a special examination. Their mental health should be first on the list. What if one of them is given a license to carry a firearm, and he/she end up having a mental problem. It would be best I feel, if only teacher's and other staff were allowed firearms. It is most definetly a disaster in the making, | | | | | | |

| | They had a documentary on TV yesterday about Virginia Tech a year later and how upset and messed up the students still feel. They're young and are coming up with the wrong solutions - I think they still need some counselors on campus. And the school needs to take a firm stand. The statement "allow law-abiding citizen to carry guns on college campuses, just as you would into malls and movie theaters." gives me the shivers. What law-abiding citizens are carrying guns in the mall and movies now? In something related, the mayor of Philadelphia is starting his own anti-guns laws to help lower the crime rate in his city. He's going up against higher level law at the state level. He wants to limit gun permits and put more control in. This is more like it. | | | | | | |

| | Well so far thank God there haven't been any incidents at movies, but some months ago there was a crazed person that did open fire at a shopping mall...yikes are we safe anywhere? Being that I'm in a major city area I sometimes wonder while walking down the street how many people are "packing" a weapon of any kind I hope all cities mandate tougher gun control | | | |

| | WTF is right! I've read some discussion right here by members who advocate that very thing, saying the students would be able to protect themselves and it would save lives. I think it's an outrageous and horrifying thought and I really got blasted for saying that but it's the way I feel. I hope if that ever is allowed on any of our college campuses there's a way to get a list of those that allow it because those places would be where I would want my grandkids to definitely NOT go when the time comes. We need to toughen the laws and enforce them so known emotionally and mentally disturbed people can't get a gun and we need to improve security on our campuses and in our schools and even in our shopping malls. You're so right, this is another disaster in the making. Let's hope it doesn't go anywhere but there seem to be so many on that bandwagon it scares the $hit out of me! Annie | | | | | | |

| | I'm so glad you agree with me...this kind of thinking that students be allowed to carry guns is like a time bomb ready to blow... don't people see that for crying out loud? Also the risk of "accidents" would be higher too...all there need be is someone with an itchy trigger finger and chaos could errupt | | | |

| | I've heard of that story and it was really sad that that happened. So many lives wasted during that incident. Regarding this new rule or Act. I guess, it will never be applicable in our country. We're actually not allowed to come inside a university wearing slippers and shorts what more if it's a gun. hehehe.. It's a scary Act. | | | | | | |

| | I was visiting near UVa when the Virginia Tech Massacre Occurred...Horrific. I'm not from the US,I Live in Ireland. Gun advocates say "Guns don't Kill People,People kill People"..My thoughts on that is,"It's a lot easier, though,If you have a gun.." I don't like the Idea of a Student population being armed to the teeth. MILITARY colleges don't habitually carry weapons,do they? Many guns in a confined space is not a good mix.. There are no acceptable losses when some nut with a lethal weapon has decided it's time to mark his place in History, and wants to bring as many as possible with Him..In the panic of such an attack, how many would have had time to reach a Personal weapon, let alone use it effectively before getting shot,or losing it to someone who's stepped over the line of Humanity, effectively giving him more ammunition? If You need weapons on a campus,Improve security-the Students are the protectees, not the Protectors. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, that's the famous saying of gun advocates, especially an organization like the National Rifle Association here--having a gun DOES make it easier to kill--even the most "mild" personality might be tempted to shoot off a gun if they erroneously thought they were being threatened | | | |

| | Different countries have its own kind of taking care style. However, i just do not really agree of kids bring their gun to school. It will cost an unwanted threat to all of the other students in the school. It is already frightening enough to see people taking guns around with them. Creating a group on supporting carrying gun, it is more like having a small group of terrorist in the campus. I cannot imagine how unsafe the campus will be. THere will be no gun-free environment. All you have to worried about is when someone went berserk and the gun shot will sounded off any moment and all you do is to hind a place and prepared your gun to prevent yourself being killed. It is like the Japanese movie, Battle Royale, where the classmates have to kill each other so that he/she can survive to leave the deadly area. Just watch it and you will get to know why i am worried about this situation. It is really dangerous, and instead getting just only injuries in campus, you might get killed in the end. It is so frightening!!! | | | | | | |

| | They were doing interviews with some of the students at Virginia Tech and how THEY felt about students being allowed to carry guns, and none of the ones they interviewed wanted to see guns on campus at all---allowing students to carry guns is like a killing waiting to happen....it would only be a matter of time | | | |

| | I agree... However, i would like it happen in the later portion then faster. The longer it takes, the better as i believe that when people are not interested in the gunning or how to defence themselves by bringing their guns to their school, people will not think about it... I just do not want it to be happening in our world. | | | |
