Smoking in the UK -do smokers pay for NHS or cost the NHS?

What are your views on this???
In theory if smoking were that bad for you wouldnt the government ban cigaretts? Do you think that the government like people to smoke because they get lots of revenue from the taxes they charge.
People argue that the taxes they pay on cigaretts pay for the NHS, others say that the smokers cost the NHS money, Are smokers funding our health service? or their own care maybe? or costing the NHS more
what are your views?
