How can you tell if a coconut is good? Shake it and if there's milk it's good?

Well When I worked at Wal-mart in produce that is what they said. So, yesterday we bought one with milk in it. We got ready to eat it and opened it it was molded. So, I took it back. The lady asked if I wanted my money back but I didn't I wanted a coconut. So, I got another one and went home. Brad immediately cut into it and it was also molded. So, I took it back and asked to speak to someone in produce. Of course, they were on lunch. So, I left without a coconut. I drove down the road to another store and bought a watermelon because they did not have coconuts. The lady at the front door of Wal-mart, that worked there, told me that she had never bought a good coconut from there. When I worked there we kept them in the cooler(fridge) and then when we needed them we would put them on the shelve at room temperaure, which is why I think that they were molded. So, is there really any way to tell if a coconut is good?

From what I gather coconuts do not have a long shelf life and it could be that Walmart is storing cocunuts longer than is natural but take into account that most produce is brought over from other countries anyway! I think there would be a fluctuation of temperatures according to how each carrier transports it and this cannot help but refrigerating? I think you have to use a coconut in less than a week and it will not store any longer than a couple days when opened.

I used to work in the produce department at WalMart too! That is exactly what they told us as well, that when you shake them there should be milk in it. Well, I've never bought a coconut before, but I try to steer clear from buying produce at WalMart, because it's never as nice as the produce from other local grocery stores. We also keep our coconuts in the cooler at my Walmart, and then bring them to room temperature when it's time to put them on the sales floor. That could be the reason for the molding.
I no longer work in the produce department, because I honestly couldn't stand it! I work on the 97 Wall now, which is the hot dog and lunchable wall. I like it a lot better there, even thought it too can get annoying at times.

Never heard of refrigerating coconuts ... they are a tropical fruit! I wouldn't buy coconuts in the stores. If you want the meat of a coconut buy a bag of shredded coconut in the baking aisle. If you want coconut milk, look in the canned fruit section or gourmet food aisle. Whole coconuts just aren't a good value and too much hassle.
