I always think of this question, How can the music industry survive in spite of piracy? Come to think of it, there are so many downloadable music available as well as pirated cd's. In fact many local studios in my place are closing because earnings from recordings is very low. people would prefer downloading on their mp3s and ipods from friends instead of buying those cd's (not to mention the internet). I don't think bands can enjoy on their royalties as much as they could before, the way for them to earn big is through their live shows. Do you have any suggestion that could keep the music industry healthy while enjoying these technology?

Actually, it's not so much piracy that's causing the financial problems in the music industry. It's their refusal to adapt to the changing times. The slump in record sales started in the late 1980's when records were pulled off the store shelves, & replaced by Compact disks. Was this a coincidence? I'm not sure, but many factors lead to the conclusion that it was not a coincidence. What needs to be done is that these record company executives, who know nothing about what the fans of the artists & bands want, need to stop interfering with the artists' creativity. What also does not help the music industry is that "independent" artists have been actually getting together in their basements with their bands, & recording their own music onto computers. They then either make their music available for downloading, or burn their own CD's that they sell at half to two-thirds of the price that the major labels sell CD's for. They also need to pick up better artists, because many of these "independent" or "unsigned" artists make better music than those signed up on the major labels. For artists that are signed on major labels, the record companies get all or most of the money from sales & from air play. The artists themselves get next to nothing, if that, from record sales. Most of the monies earned by the artists themselves are from appearances, & shows, & concert performances. I'm sure the music industry is still here to stay. Things are being shaken up with the new technologies.
