Hello can anyone help me My sone received a 10,000.00 grant from the government for retraining. He was told that he didn't have to pay taxes on this money. But when you put it on the tax form they say to it adds to his income. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong

I'm no tax expert but I do have kids in college and all that I put on the tax form is the amount we paid (not grants). We go by the amount on the tuition statement that was sent to us from the school. This amount does not go under wages but under education credits.
