last night i wastched the remake of SHUTTER, a japanese horror movie about ghosts caught in photographs. honestly, the american version wasn't that scary. when i watched the original version, i was at the end of my seat. does anyone feel that way as well? the grudge remake also wasn't that scary.. i haven't watched 'the eye' though.. maybe it's hard to capture the mysticism tied up with the east. or maybe it's unfamiliarity.. i don't know, what do you guys think?

Well I have not seen the movie, Shutter, but I have seen the American version of the Grudge. You will just have to call me a whimp but I thought that movie was absolutely terrifying. I would hate to see what the original movie is like if it is as scary as you say it is. I am not a huge fan of horror movies to begin with so I guess I probably would not last through one of these Japanese original makes of the horror movies. I don't really plan on watching Shutter until it comes out on HBO or something.

I have to agree with you, certain Japanese versions of horror films are scarier than the American ones. I'm not sure why, whether it's the originality or what, but they even have a different overall feel about them.

Phew, that's a relief. After reading your first response, I thought I was losing the plot, LOL! I always worry that I'm going to post a response to the wrong discussion when I've got lots of tabs opened.

muscare, I think the reason the eastern films/original japanese filmsare scarier is because, in a western culture they want happy endings were as eastern horrors the ghost, monster, devil ect: even after the film has finished the bad want its revenge and wont stop unitl it has it. The fact that the revenge is still wanted from the bad this is what makes the film more scarrier because in a fact the film has not ended. Western culture always has the happy ending, and the equilibrium is always restored.

Hot darn, seriously, it is a remake? I got that vibe from commercials, and asked a horror movie buff who was raving about it at the gym, and she swore it was an original. Shows I should trust my instincts eh?

I don't think I've ever seen both versions of a movie, but I watched "The Eye" - original and "The Ring" - remake. Based on that my instantaneous conclusion is that the main problem is Hollywood. The remake in general suffers from some serious problems, mainly because there are people conscientiously taking material and trying to translate it for their 'audience.' And generally, what makes a great film, in any genre, are the subtleties. Which are usually not the first things on the list when translation occurs. People tend to prefer to copy the gross plot, which is really not what makes the movie.

Anyway, I have to admit that I'm never exactly been a fan of the horror genre. I'm easily startled, easily frightened, am historically terrified of fake blood and guts and hate having mild heart attacks any time something jumps at me. It's growing on me though, as I slowly slowly grow more jaded.

well, yeah.. i think you're right.. the essence of the movie was lost.. my favourite part of the story was replaced by sexuality and egocentrism.. anyway, yeah, i watched the original version of shutter in college about 2-3yrs ago.. it was really horrific, not in the sense that there was blood everywhere.. that's the thing i don't like also in western movie, too much blood and killing.. movies are more scary when sticking to the main essense of paranomal rather than having it as a killing spree..

I would have to agree with you.. I watched both the original Japanese film and the American remake of "The Ring" and found the original film more scary. I'm contemplating going to see "The Eye", and if I do I'll try and see the original as well. But I think that with American remakes, certain aspects of the film are changed and moulded to fit the American audience which is (obviously) a lot different from their oriental counterparts.

i know.. the only thing good about watching the remake is that i don't have to read subtitles anymore... hahaha..

yeah, i think i have to agree with you on this. The original horror stories are scarier than those of Hollywood remake. I've seen both "The Ring" and "The Grudge" (I've seen the original of "SHutter" but not the H-version yet) and I can say, the original really scared the hell out of me. Me and my friends were really screaming and jumping up and down of our seats. I find the Western version scary too but there was a bit of commercialism in there... i dunno... And now, I'm a fan of Asian horrors.

It's the lack of special effects that gets me really - the less the better because it just make it more real. Part of the reason that scares me is thinking, hey, this may really happen. But when you put in too much special effects, you'll just go thinking it's impossible for that to happen and you start treating the movie as no more that just a film.

SHUTTER is Thailander film, not Japanese. yeah, i did not watch the remake because i know i'll be disappointed 'again'. i actually got pretty scared of Shutter (original) though possessing a cliche concept. English remake always failed to scare me. 1 missed call remake too. rasp
