I have a ton of stuff that has accumulated over the years along with stuff that my family decided they wanted to donate to me once I told them of my plans about a yard sale. Which is fine because if I sale their items I get to keep the money. I have one room in my house that is packed full and I still have to pick up a good bit more stuff from my families homes. I'm having trouble getting things organized for the yard sale. Can anyone give me some tips on organizing, pricing, and how to deal with those people that like to talk down on prices?

I would ask the people if they are giving clothes to provide you with some hangers. Get a few of those rolling clothing racks to roll outside, or maybe you could hang up a clothes line. Hanging most of the clothes is by far the easiest way for customers to browse through what you have, and you can always return the hangers. For the rest of the items, I would set up some tables. Try to keep things sorted by rooms of your home. (Example: Keep all small appliances, dishes, silverware, etc. together on the same table). Then have a table for miscellaneous things. Label everything with those small pricing dots you can get at the dollar store. If you have a lot of the same thing you could post a sign that said, "X cents each!" Get a big sturdy box for all books that you have for sale, and label the box with the price (Maybe do paper backs 50 cents each or 3 for $1, hard backs $1 each or 3 for $2). About people who will try to talk you down, you must take this on a case by case basis. Decide what the item in question is worth, and be somewhat firm. You don't want to sell a brand new pair of jeans that still have the tags on them for $1, and it's okay to tell someone that. On the other hand, if you just have TONS of stuff, and are willing to take anything for it, then let people have the stuff at the price they want. It's up to you.

A few weeks ago we were having a yard sale to benefit Relay for Life and a lot of people on freecycle donate stuff to us. My two car gargage was full of stuff. We tired to organize it in the beginning but it just wasn't working. When we had the yard sale we just put all the adult clothes on a huge flat trailer and all the kids clothes on 4 huge tables. We put the other stuff on tables and such. The clothes were only .25 each and you would not believe how people dug through every piece of those clothes. One lady stayed 3 hours on Friday and came back on Sat. I had one lady that came back 6 times. Yes, the clothes were cheap but we probably had over 1000 pcs that we needed to sell. We had a great sale and everything that was left over I gave to someone who was starting a thrift store.
