What did you think of Wednesday's show (30/04/08 UK)?  | |  I'm talking about the incredibly moving Maria episode.
This was the most moving episode of Coronation Street I've ever seen, and I still feel really affected by it whenever I think about it. I think it was done really well and that they handled a very difficult subject sensitively and realistically.
I'm sort of in two minds about whether they should have shown so much detail given how emotional it made me feel even though I've (thankfully) never been in that situation. I can only imagine how disturbing this episode would have been for somebody who's had to go through it in real life.
It was brave of the production team to do such a storyline and it was right to do it, as sadly it happens in real life, and soaps should portray real life.

And while I agree with you, (about soaps depicting reality) I am extra curious to see it cuz my opinion of Maria is not all that high. Over the years she has played the playgirl part, always willing to mix it up and contribute to unfaithfulness and secrets and all the while showing terrible judgement of character. (thinking Charlie most recently)
She visited Canada about 3? years ago. Made it to Toronto I think for chat and interviews. I would have said hi had i known where it was happening. She is a cute little thing, and quite a good actress.

 liquorice (858) | 4 months ago | I agree that Maria isn't really a very sympathetic or likeable character in general and I've never been able to take her seriously as a person. She's quite superficial; all looks and no substance! And no, she certainly isn't a very good judge of character!
However, the episode in question, I thought, showed a whole other side of her and made her appear much more three-dimensional.
I'd be interested to see an interview with the actress (Samia Smith) to see what she's like in real life. | |
