How did you find or create your website layout?

I fear my problem is my open mind, so many choices, different tweaks I can do, I have so many ideas, and yet my starting point is the issue. I'll start making my page, based on content, but I know my images and links are most of it (what I mean, is I need to put these in to create my page including images) The style is my problem. How did you find the best layout, or what was right for you? Any good generators that are user friendly? Any suggestions?

well i am a web designer by profession and so i think it is very simple for me. i keep in mind the creative and asthetic values in mind and with nice colors create the same and thats the simple formula which works very well for me

By profession, by any chance can you tell me what type of code you'd recommend me learning? I've started teaching myself HTML and CSS but I'm not sure where the internet is going towards, and what browsers are used most and whatnot.... I'm curious what format is best...I'm not sure what code is old or new.... I don't want to waste time learning something they are trying to do away with....
