Typing words per minute? | | I have noticed that some people put a lot into counting how fast you type, words per minute and such. I have especially noticed that it seems that in the US there are a lot of job openings for typists and secretaries etc, that requires a certain wpm speed. In Sweden, where I live, this is not very often discussed at all. Mainly, I think this is because the cost of hiring a person i so expensive here that all companies tries its best to have as small staff as possible, why hiring someone for typing is just not economic. All jobs normally includes a bit of typing, of course, but it is the knowledge and experience in the subject you are working with that is essential. Since I am not used to this terminology I have never measured my typing speed. I am a pretty fast typer, I know that, and I never look at the keyboard when typing, so I guess that is a plus. On the other hand I sometimes type so fast there are many errors, throwing letters around etc. I think it would be fun to try to measure my wpm, just to see how I keep up with those ads for jobs and just in general. Does anyone know a site where one can do this? What is your wpm? You people who live in the US, how important is this wpm, is it something you always put in your resume, do you have typing classes in school to learn typing properly and fast? Let me know!

Emiese (363) | 3 months ago | Don't you find that annoying though? I am pretty fast to but have plenty of errors, and it annoys me because it takes time. Do you read it through and change the errors or do you change them straight away? My hands knows exactly where the backspace button is, and mostly I "feel" more than know that I have pressed the wrong keys, and by the time the brain picks it up my finger has already touched the backspace button!

I am lucky to get thirty words a miniute. I almost didn't pass my highschool typing class which was required to graduate lol I was a straight a student except typing I passed it with a low c. I can not type fast and I can not spell so maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe I just take to long thing how do I spell that.

Emiese (363) | 3 months ago | Don't you feel that you get faster the more you type? Most things improve through practise. I used to practise typing on my dads type writer when I was a kid. I loved typing so I could sit for hours just typing down from a book. My parents always wondered if I was sane when I showed them page after page where I had retyped one of my novels!

| | 4. Ishtara (463) | 3 months ago | I noticed this here (Australia) when I was last looking for a job. I was looking for admin/office work, and a lot of jobs asked for typing speed of anything fron 40 to 80 wpm, even in roles in which it wouldn't have really been necessary. This was a real setback for me, as I wasn't considered for jobs I could easily have done. I have a typing speed of 38wpm with 99% accuracy, which will never get any faster as I have a deformity in my hands and my little fingers don't bend properly, therefore I can't touch-type.

Emiese (363) | 3 months ago | I am sorry to hear that ruled you out from jobs! That is what I'm concerned about too, when setting a number or per centage as a rule for a job then you can loose so many good applicants that may have so many other good features that maybe are better suited for the job. I guess it is like that in many professions though. I have a friend that works for a law company that only hires straight A-students, no look at personality. She says most of the time it is really boring, because even though they are all brilliantly smart they have very different personalities, and very little that makes them work good together. That must be hard! I also noticed this when I lived in Australia, many adds had this wpm requirement. That is why i started the question. I also wonder if you have to have it measured in a "legal" way, ie with an authorized company etc, or do they make you prove it at the interviews? I mean, if you make 38 wpm wouldn't it just be easy to put "approximately 40 wpm" etc in your resume, how do they know?

Emiese (363) | 3 months ago | That is a good way of learning anything. While playing games you don't really think about the fact that you are learning, and it makes it so much funnier to learn too! What online games did you play for the typing "lessons"?

| | 6. wayz12 (549) | 3 months ago | My typing speed is between 45-55 wpm. How do I know? Well, I took a typing test when I applied for a clerk position for the city. Most clerical positions here in the US requires some sort of typing test, plus computer literacy exams. A good grasp of the common applications like Word and Excel is usually expected. If you really want to know how fast you can type, try searching online for sites where you can take a typing exam. Together with speed is accuracy, so even if you type fast, but makes plenty of mistakes, then that is not good. Usually, your mistakes is deducted from your speed score, and they will give you an accurate wpm score.

Emiese (363) | 3 months ago | Thank you for your input! Taking tests for jobs, seems harsh. What if you have a bad day or a bad keyboard:) or anything. I'd be so nervous, but I guess it is nothing different than how an interview can go. I'll have a look on the internet for typing tests. I think you are right about having the one that looks at both speed and accuracy, otherwise I guess it would be a bit misleading, cause I would be very, very fast:)
