I am and have been a vinyl buyer and DJ for ten years but have recently discovered virtual mixing. I feel I am cheating using this software as it is easy to use and you don't get the hands-on experience of mixing records. Anyone could do it but I am fascinated by it.

However, I am fearful that vinyl is becoming obsolete because of the new technology that is available. Is virtual mixing a good idea or should we stick to our guns and carry on in the same fashion as our DJ idols back in the day?

I'd like to know what your opinions are on the subject.

There's a couple good, inexpensive M-Audio products out there that can give you the turntable control on your computer using mp3s and other audio formats. It's great for that live set feel while still having the ability to carry around your entire song collection in your computer. I've heard of dj's using them with a wireless internet connection so they can download requests on the fly and mix them into their set.

Music will always evolve. The Moog introduced electronic instruments to the mix, but that doesn't mean that all the acoustic artists changed their ways. You can ride the new wave or stick to your guns. It's all a matter preference and what's comfortable to you. Personally, I don't see vinyl going away any time soon.

Well, we could he purists and insist on the ancient instruments or we could move with the times and embrace the future. I prefer to use present advances and look out for future directions. Music can only be enhanced and only mediocrity can hurt it.

I've never used any hands on equipment. And I recently got into virtual mixing. It's nothing that I've really been interested in, but now I'm seeing things differently. There's no harm in virtual mixing if you keep using your stand DJ equipment. I think it's okay to do both.
