Buy from local farmers. Grow your own fruit and vegetables.
What are your ideas?

I think its all in the ripple effect. Let me enlarge on the concepts I already put forth.
We can all do our part. In fact, we can all do our part at home. We can grow fast growing, environmentally friendly agriculture, the community has to buy locally. Using renewable resources - and crops that match the geographic area/climate - reducing the need for water in many circumstances.
Animal husbandry techniques that enable crop production not environmental degradation, upping farming productivity.
We can build our houses with renewable materials, not exotic rainforest woods for instance. We can use recycled furniture and clothes - yes this is huge. You don't have to think on a larger scale - these small things will help sustain our resources and protect our environment. Use CFC lightbulbs.
Turn off your lights and unplug your appliances when not in use. Have a kiva - outside wood burning fireplace. Saves electricity or propane and does't heat up your home.
Make a cobb house or the like, protects against pests, fire, environment etc and is made from sustainable non toxic materials.
Weather strip your house, put gaskets on your fridge that fit, make sure there are no leaks in your water line or vents. Double pane your windows. Use those energy efficient curtains. These seem little but their huge! You use less energy warming or cooling your house, without the proper fitting gasket on your fridge you lose energy again - alot, leaks lose valuable resources like water. Have tall ceilings, you can put more windows in allowing in more light (less electricity) and more warmth in winter.
Does my explaining make more sense to you on how little things can mean alot?

You can also buy land and create a community. Each person buys or rents own house. You share a communal garden/animals/greenhouse. Have potluck dinners with interesting topics like sustainablity!
Here's a directory of communties, you can find one that matches your interest and location.
