Old Salem, Go back in time.  email this discussion to a friend?

Old Salem is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1766 by Moravians. They bought 98,000 acres. Over 100 buildings are in the town. The people used quill pens, fireplace cooking, and learned to sew back then. These buildings have been left in there original conditions.
Step into the 1700 Winkler Bakery and see women dressed in 1700 attire, as they mix up bread for the day. The original oven is still used daily to bake the bread. The oven is still heated by wood that has been cut. The oven temperature has to rise before the bread, cookies, and cakes can be made. Watch as the Moravian Sugar Cakes are taken out of the oven.
An old pipe organ sits in the Single Brother's House. They used to play it during worship time. After sitting in the worship room, you can go down the hallway to see the tailor. He measures you for your 17-1800's outfit and then makes it. Down stairs you will go into the Potter's room where he makes clay cups, plates, and bowls on a wheel. He then puts the clay into the kiln to be fired. The Tinsmith and Pewter room is exciting, as you watch the Tinsmith make spoons and tin cups. The tinsmith makes the spoons on an open fire. The smell of lunch floats down the hallway, as the single brother's make lunch over the open fireplace.
The T. Vogler Gun Shop shows how rifles and muskets were made in the 1700's. Watch as the gunsmith uses a forge to make the guns.
Men and women make shoes and buckles out of leather at the Shultz Shoemaker Shop.
The Salem Tavern has Soup of the day for $3.75 or have a Reuben Sandwich for $6.95. The children's menu ranges from $4.00-$4.75. Sit at a 1700's table and eat your lunch. All meals are cooked on an open fireplace.
Stop by the toy museum to see the variety of toys from all over the world. You can see toys from the 1700's to present day. Teddy bears, dolls, puppets, and toy zoo's.
Bring a child into the Children's museum to see how the 20th century has brought change to children at play. Weave through ropes, roll marbles, build a brick wall, crawl through mazes. All of these things are centered around the Old Salem values you see through the town.
Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts opened in 1965. This association was set up to preserve the Southern Artist and Craftmen of the 16 and 1700's. There are 24 rooms set up to reflect the artistry from 1600-present.
Cost for a day: Adults $21.00 Children 6-16 $10.00
