What's the deal with the star?

Ok I have to know. I know that this is actually quite important to some of you. Why are some people trying to "rid themselves of their star"?
I'm so curious and afraid to post this at the same time. I am respecting your wishes. Well sort of. I simply will not rate negatively but I AM abstaining from rating you at all if you are on the quest. (so to speak)
Could you tell me why though?

You'll get a star of your very own when you reach 100 posts. :)

I was sitting here thinking about them myself. I have absolutely no idea what they are used for. I'm guess it has something to do with a ratings system? I honestly can't come up with a better answer than that. I'm still learning about a couple of things here on Mylot.

Although I agree with my sister Zu, I do not want my star dropped or rated with a negative.
When I was little I was one of those kids that liked getting that little gold or silver star on my paper when I did well...no matter how stupid it seemed to get a sticker for doing well. It was just the point of making me smile because the teacher noticed that I did well.
But to others defense....I would not want to work my every hardest to be graded poorly even though I was right and the teacher just didn't like me.
That is why some people want to be rated poorly completely.
If there grade is already bad...then a rogue teacher can not pick on you anymore.

I don't know. I think it's kind of dumb. Some of these people say the star rating means nothing to them, but then they ask people to rate them negatively and then continue to bring these people up. It's obvious that they care, so I don't rate them.
I'm not into playing head games.
