do you dog-ear or use a book mark when reading?  email this discussion to a friend?

hey there. for me, i simply memorize the page number and close the book. however, not all the time, i can remember and i had to flip the book back and forth and try to locate my place. i tried bookmarks, however, i end up misplacing so many bookmarks that it's not worth it and i can't stand to fold the page or even dog-ear the corner...LOL

how about you?

Hi there Shiloh!

If the book is mine, I just dog-ear it. But if I just borrowed it, I use a bookmark.

As I read more than one book at a time I wouldn't be able to memorise all the page numbers.lol

Why not just use anything for a bookmark. That's what I do I use till receipts, old lottery tickets or sometimes takeaway menus. I agree that dog earing is not an option as it damages the book.

hi there...thanks for the reply. that's a great suggestion!

i will try that...

how many books do you read in a week?

myLot reputation of 92/100. Foxfire1875 (1231)   ranked 46 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

It varies as I have about 3-5 books on the go at the same time, also it depends how much time but on average I can get through about 2 or maybe 3 a week.

It would be more but I need to do boring things like eat, sleep and do housework.lol

Hi shiloh. I always use a book mark. I have many book marks because sometimes I'm reading two books at the same time lol. So everyone that know me give me book marks since they know that I love to read.
cheers

I agree with the first poster. If the book belongs to me, I dog ear the pages. If it is borrowed, from the library or a friend, I always use a bookmark. Why the difference, I dont know for sure. I guess because if the bookmark falls out then I have lost my spot, but dog earing I can always find the last page I read.

SHRIEEEEEK!!!

Sorry. A moment to recover for this former rare books & manuscripts library worker.... :o[

It's EXTREMELY rare that I feel the need to DOGear -- maybe if I were on a plane & a terrorist attacked, & I dropped my bookmark, well....

Seriously, I use handmade bookmarks made from acid-free paper, decorated by ME, as I'm an artist. I've made specialty bookmarks for friends for stocking stuffers (usually stuffed into a BOOK).

FOR THOSE WHO ARE AFRAID THE MARKER WILL FALL OUT, just use a plain strip of paper, & before you close the book, simply jot down the number of the page you were on. That way, if it does fall out, you can still find it!

Dogearring. Euw! :::shudder:::

I always use a bookmark.

Now it may not be a traditional bookmark, it could be anything I happen to pick up that is handy - a slip of paper, an envelope from junk mail that I've thrown out, a grocery list, etc.

Most of the books I'm reading lately are from the library and they have the card in the back so I use that. I tuck it in the slot made for that purpose in the back of the book while I'm actually reading, then pull it out when I get ready to put the book down.

How do you keep losing bookmarks?

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

hi there...

thanks for the suggestion..I will be trying that out...

well, to answer your question, i always would take out the bookmark, put them down and sometimes, leave them behind, especially when i was rushing to get to another place. sometimes, i just misplace it in our home...also, they simply fell out. no matter how i try, i am a person who's not into losing things, except bookmarks...LOL

even my friend gave me a gift from Singapore of 8 magnetic bookmarks... i already lost half of it...huhuhu...so sad, so i just keep the 4 in my drawer...so afraid of losing more...

how many books do you borrow from the library in a week?

myLot reputation of 91/100. Ldyjarhead (5188)   ranked 1,197 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

I usually get 3-4 books when I go, depending on whether I've read all of them from the last trip or not. I don't have a set schedule, I just go when I'm in town running other errands.

It's usually at least twice a month though, sometimes more.

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

hehehe... that's great! lately, i haven't much time but to crack a stack of books that i used to a few years back. nowadays, i have only time to read 1-2 books/week.

what genres do you like?

myLot reputation of 91/100. Ldyjarhead (5188)   ranked 1,197 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Mostly Christian fiction. I prefer light reading before bed, but I'll also read some self-help type books, or things pertaining to gardening or other interests.

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

hehehe...me too, i love Steeple Hill Novels. Also i have a collection of Stories from the Heart, Ripples of Joy, etc.

Others genres are computer/software related books for my work.

Who are your favorite authors?

myLot reputation of 91/100. Ldyjarhead (5188)   ranked 1,197 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

In the past, I never followed any particular author, I would just go through the library shelves and pick what sounded interesting, usually opting for those in a series.

Doing that, I stumbled onto Karen Kingsbury. Now I'm reading everything she's written as soon as I can get my hands on it!

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

sometimes i try out other authors too... i never heard about Karen Kingsbury...could you tell me about her and her style of writing.

thanks

Sometimes I dog-ear mine, but thats only if I can't find a book mark. I'd much rather use a book mark, it keeps the book neat.

I used a post-it note and stick it quite a long way into the page. It never falls out, and doesn't damage the book at all.

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

hi thanks for responding. that's a great idea... who are your favorite authors?

myLot reputation of 94/100. CelticSoulSister (968)   ranked 1,509 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Thanks!

I don't really have a favourite author, but I have a favourite book. It's Jacqueline Susanne's "Once Is Not Enough", originally published in 1973 but I think it's been re-released a few times since then. It's the only book of hers that I like though....and I find that the blurb on the cover, plus other people's reviews of it completely miss the point. They seem to home in on the glitzy Hollywood-ish aspect of it, but to me that's merely the setting for an easy-to-read, but deep, complex and very moving story.

Who are your favourite authors?

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Hmmm...favorite authors...some of them are Debby Macomber, Darlene Mindrup, Cheryl Wolverton, Alice Gray, Terry Ulman (Computer books), Robert Kiyosaki, etc....

what genres do you like?

myLot reputation of 94/100. CelticSoulSister (968)   ranked 1,509 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Ooooooops sorry lol never heard of any of those, but I am a bit behind the times.

Genre-wise, I like a good psychological thriller, a good what I call "intelligent romance" or I just like novels that are a chunk out of people's lives. I also like reading non-fiction....astrology books, books of quotations and self-help psychology books.

myLot reputation of 98/100. shiloh_222 (2384)   ranked 73 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Well, i think it's just but natural, with all the authors world-wide, who can keep up with all of them...

me too, i love self-help books or sometimes, do-it-yourself book... hmmm... do you like true stories?

myLot reputation of 94/100. CelticSoulSister (968)   ranked 1,509 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

Yes I like true stories, especially if they are about ordinary people and their lives. One of my favourite books is Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes". So well written, sad and funny at the same time and just about ordinary working class life, but about spirited and unusual people.

myLot reputation of 78/100. Maggiepie (2990)   ranked 229 out of 9,003 in reading  4 years ago

MAKE SURE THE BOOK TO WHICH YOU DO THAT ISN'T VALUABLE.

As one who's rescued many a book for the library where I worked for mumbledy- mumble years, I learned that Post-It Notes leave a residue, which, over time, eats away at the paper. Acidity of any sort will eventually destroy a book, as will many other factors (light, temperatures, moisture, etc.).

Call me pernickity, but I've seen what becomes of poor old books, & they all remind me of wounded, elderly people, each with a wealth of information, yet dying literally before my eyes, turning to powder in my hands, unable to pass on their story to the next generation.

Makes me feel like crying.

I'm a book lover and I hate it when I see my books being mistreated..hehe, well, I'm really careful with books especially my favorite ones (perfect example: my Harry Potter Books) so, having said that, I don't dog-ear books, I can't find the guts to do it...haha, I use a bookmark, or if there is none available, I remember the page as well...or usually the chapter, as I stop reading after chapters. I find it hard to remember when I stop reading midway a chapter..hehe

Books are to precious to me to dog ear them or fold a page. I always use a bookmark, whenever i see bookmarks that are cheap, or free, i just take a lot that way when i do lose one i ahve another lol. I wish i could memorize the page number and then find that again easily lol.

how many bookmarks do you have right now?

myLot reputation of 64/100. darkjedi (4347)  4 years ago

I think I have about 10 left or so, I moved from california almost 5 years ago and my favorite bookstore had a whole bunch, so I took a bunch of them. Im also very good on bookmarks lol. Most of the time Ill use a bookmark until it cant be used anymore at all, torn down to a small tiny very easily lost piece.
