Do any of you avid gardeners here make your own fertilizer or do you just stick to commercially available ones?

I've just started using coffee grounds as fertilizer for my green plants, but am wondering what else I can use from my home as fertilizer.

(I know some people back in Malaysia who swear that pee is fab for veg...)

I use only organic fertilisers for my garden.Cowdung manure is sold by people who have cattle so I buy it from them and I swear by it.Most of my plants really thrive well.Another fertiliser I buy is the vermicompost. It is very good and pretty expensive too.So now i'm trying to make my own vermicompost. All the dry flower, leaves and vegetable peels are put in a pit and I have collected some earth worms and I have put it into the pit.For more information you get details from the internet.

If you have stinging nettles growing in your garden or anywhere nearby they make a fine fertiliser (nitrogen rich) if you cuit them down and soak in a bucket of water for a couple of weeks. Don't let the water evaporate or lak, kep it topped up.
Keep the liquid on the ground when feeding as it may burn plant leaves but it is vry good.
Along the lines of coffee grounds you can also use tea or tea bags when you have finished with them.
Near me is a field where horses are kept and the owners throw the manure out onto the verge at the side of a path. I'm up there with a plastic bag getting my free fertilser as soon as it's had time to rot down a bit. They say it's ready to use hen the smell has gone. Good Job!

I only use organic fertilizers for food.

Coffee grinds, tea bags and egg shells are things that a lot of people throw away. You can also use old coffee or tea as a fertilizer as long as there is not sugar in it. Fruit peelings are an excellent way to feed your plants. Banana peels contain a lot of potassium. You should let them dry. They break up like potato chips.

I don't use them because they are probably synthetic but vitamins are great. Plants are where we are supposed to get most of our vitamins. So the trace elements can be beneficial to plants.

I harvest worm castings. This is really easy if you have the space for it. What I do is lay a 3'x2' mulch bag on the ground. Any thick plastic will work. The worms come to the surface and leave their castings. This is known as black gold in the gardening world. You can make a tea out of it, lightly mix it into the soil around the plant or mix it in the soil prior to planting.

Worms will eat your vegetable scraps and give you fertilizer in exchange if you want to raise a few.

If you want to make compost that is one of the best ways to get free fertilizer. Get a bucket that seals. Throw your vegetable scraps in there and let them sit until it turns into a liquid. If you are interested in this method do a search to find more information. I put harmful weeds into 5 gallon buckets until they turn to liquid and dump them onto the compost pile. But I let them sit all summer so I don't really know how long it will take or if you should mix it with water.

I never use manure. If I did I would compost it 1st. You can also make a tea out of it. sad Rabbit droppings are great if want to keep one as a pet or for food. whistle

For my client's flower beds I use an organic/ synthetic blend. I don't use this on the vegetables that I grow because food grown with synthetic fertilizer does not have the same taste as organically grown.

Ps Most plants do not like warm water so urine is only good if you let it cool down. lol

I am not a gardener. But I am an environmentalist. So, in order to cut down the garbage usage, I always collect all the organic waste after meal and bury them in the back yard. The organic waste was buried in different random sport, so they could decompose in time before the same spot is utilized for the same purpose again. Over time, the soil quality is improved and becoming fertile. The plants that my parents and my aunt planted is growing healthily. It's cost effective and environmental friendly in the same time. But my father sometimes dispose of the fruit skins, because he doubt that the pesticide and preservative on the fruit skin might contaminate the soil in our back yard.
