The importance of self-sufficiency

Our failing economy presents an increasing need for all of us to become more self-sufficient and less dependent on all the conveniences that we have come to think we can't live without. I honestly belive that our own country needs to take a good close look at how it could be less dependent on foreign resources, and whether we are doing our citizens an injustice by selling so much that is produced here to foreign countries. What are you thoughts on this matters?
