With rising fuel costs, what money saving tips do you have for summer vacation?

We love to travel, visiting new places and meeting new people. With rising fuel costs, summer vacation may be non-existant this year. We are usually frugal when we travel with only the occasional extravagant itinerary, but this year we will have to REALLY cut back in order to go anywhere.
On a frugal trip, we never leave home without our ice chest. I freeze 2 liter bottles filled with flavored tea, water, and other non-staining drinks. Because we are trying to live a greener lifestyle, we also each have our own to-go cup for the trip. The frozen bottles help to keep our other food chilled, without having the mess of ice melting. Taking our own drinks beats paying $1.59 x 3 people a couple of times a day. We could almost buy a couple more gallons of gasoline with those savings...haha!

The first and most important is the upkeep of your vehicle. If you don't keep up with all the small things you will notice over time the amount of moola you spend on fuel. Simple things of having a clean air filter, changing old fuel filters etc are simple little things that over time you will notice that you are getting more miles per gallon. Changing the oil is another one as well.

With carrying a cooler and making sandwiches, bottled drinks etc is a great way to cut down on having to buy things in conventient stores. gas stations etc. Saving an extra buck or two that will will surely get your more fuel.

Thanks so much for responding nicholjade! I agree that upkeep of the vehicle is very important. We are fortnate in that when we bought our newest vehicle, the dealer was running a promotion for "oil changes for life" for as long as you owned the vehicle. We definitely take advantage of THAT service.

That is such an excellent tip! I grew up very poor, but my parents always managed to take us on a camping trip about every other year. My Mom always packed a cooler with baloney sandwiches and drinks for us so that they wouldn't have to spend as much money. I guess a lot of people are having to go back to that frame of mind now. Hey check out this website. I heard about it on the news the other day. It's a great way to save gas!

Thanks for the website address. Great ideas! A few weeks ago we had to travel to St. Louis for a basketball tournament. I knew that we needed to cut costs everywhere we could, with the miles that we were going to have to drive and the cost of the hotel. With ingredients that I already had on hand, I baked cookies and package them so that each of us would have 2 cookies in each package. This way they lasted a bit longer. I also cut up the remaining carrots, celery and brocolli and did the same with them, placing them in individual bags. I gathered the last bits of lunch meat and cheese and grabbed the bread. All of this served two purposes. First to cut costs and second to not waste food that I had in the fridge.
