Would you vote for a Presidential candidate if you didn't like them? email this discussion to a friend?

Sometimes I think that some people just stay home and refuse to vote when their favorite Democrat or Republican candidate is not in the race. Maybe it's a personality issue. But, if you think about it, that's not such a good idea. After all, you're not just boycotting the current Democrat or Republican. You're be condemning the entire party. And, practically ensuring that the opposing party wins by default. Noone wants that.

Even if you don't like a candidate's personality, there are many things that can be agreed upon, like policies and goals. What do you think about that? Is that how you see it? Would you rather vote for a candidate that you like or one that you agree with and has sound ideas?

Would you rather sit out the vote and boycott if your favorite politcal candidate were not in the race? Or, would you step up and vote for anyone that your favorite political party put up for President? Would it make a difference if you disagreed if the person's policies? Would you still vote for them, anyway?

Hi. I'm from the Philippines but I've been watching the news in U.S. Oregon and Kentucky had their Democratic primaries last Tuesday.

I watched Fox News last Friday and Jesse Ventura, the former governor of Minnesota, was one of the guests. He says he wishes that the U.S. government would provide the option of "none of the above." It means that he would be participating in the election but he would be giving a vote of no confidence. It may seem funny, but I do think he has a point. If you think that none of the candidates deserve your vote, then by all means don't vote. I'd say, go by your conscience.

People should consider two things: character and policies. Of course, they should study the candidates' platform as well as the policies and principles they espouse. Candidates could sweep you off their feet with their honeyed words, but if it's not in their character to uphold what's right and to promote the common good, and if they're just out to promote their vested interests, then you shouldn't cast your vote for those candidates.

In my country, people fall for those have "the personality." A lot of people in show business end up holding government offices. One of our presidents was an actor, and he was later deposed and imprisoned on corruption charges. A lot of my countrymen have lost hope, because all they have now are just broken promises.

I hope people see through the sweeping rhetoric and the shiny exterior. I hope they really make their vote count. I wish that your country would choose a good president. The U.S. president is also the most powerful man (or if Hillary wins, woman) in the world. Our country and yours have close ties and a lot of my loved ones are Filipino-Americans. I wish your country the best.

I read the first two paragraphs of your response and immediately gave you best response, because you are so correct. I loved your entire response and read it twice. I agree with you so much on your comments and sincerely appreciate all the time and effort that you put into them.

Have you thought about putting up a political or life commentary blog at blogger? You have such an interesting and intelligent view on things. I'll bet many others would love to have your opinions, too.

I know that I enjoyed reading what you had to say.

"Sweeiping rhetoric" "Shiny exterior!" I couldn't have put it better myself. And, it's so true. Many politicians here are just "beautiful people" with little to offer policy wise. But, unfortunately you can only find that out after you elect them into office. And, then it's real tough voting them out.

I'm in whole-hearted agreement over the sad state of politics when an actor or celebrity can swoop in with their glamorous smile and winning words and romance voters. Later that same person will just go back on their words. Why? Because they're all flash and no substance. If a person has an established record of performance in politics*(and I don't mean years in politics, I mean actual results), then that's the person to vote for.

I wish I could talk to you all day about this, because you had so many valid points. Honestly, if you don't already have a blog on the topic of politics or life, please get one. I'd be your biggest fan! Best of luck and welcome to MyLot.

I think I need to choose from the two. While sometimes its good to boycot its still best to exercise our rights to vote. I'm sure when we will compare the candidates, there always be someone who is better in some aspects.

So for me its better to vote, we'll just have to be careful in choosing the right person to serve the country and its people.

I guess if more people held that positive view early on in the Presidential race, when there are so many candidates to choose from, then they would end up with a different result. It's the early primaries and votes that shape and determine who will be in the final two (or three, if an Independant is running.) Thanks for sharing your views.

Personally that is an interesting concept. Because I have thought about this one for sure with this Election, and sometimes I fear that it could come down to this. I have wondered why no one is talking about the Economy and what they will do to help change this if Elected. When did we loose focus on this, and make it such a Drama over other things in general? This will truly be interesting for sure. I actually work the Elections here in my County, and I am sure there will be much continued debate on this one here as well.
