How much do you think is reasonable to invest in a business?

I have been looking for a long time for a business that seems like it will suit my tastes. I am looking at a potential $40 loss though if it doesn't work out. However, I am hoping there are no hidden costs as well.
I guess if I want to make the money, I have to take the risk huh?
