At any given time children and elderly are trapped in hospitals and nursing homes. Yes, I say trapped because this is how they feel. They can not leave and are having to do things that they do not enjoy. Some of these people are there for a short time and some are there for a long time. The reason I bring this up is a discussion I had today brought up doantions and doing things at Christmas and other times. Do you help others just at Christmas or Thanksgiving? How do you help? I like giving gifts to the children at the hospital at Easter, and Christmas. I just call and find out how many they have and get things for them. I make sure I have enough by getting extra. I buy coloring book, crayons, and stuffed animals. I know it's not much but it lights up their eyes and makes them happy. If only for a short time and that makes me happy. For the nursing homes. I usually go in and ask if their is anyone that does not get visitors or very little visitation. I ask them to see if it's okay with this person if I visit. We talk for awhile and I find out things about them in just conversation. I usually find out their needs, something they miss having, or something they like doing. I get them what they are missing or need. Likewise it's not usually much and the visitation brightens their day. I do go back more to visit them. I get attached easily and it hurts to have one leave you. I have known a very nice gentlemen that was an artist and did great and fine works in California. His works are in the nursing home and in museums and art galleries. You might be surprised by who you meet and what you get to talk about just by visiting someone. I have enjoyed this and got emmense enjoyment out of it. Please share with me what you do. Thank you in advance for replies.

When I was little, for Christmas my mom and I would take gifts and candycanes to the nursing home in our town. I use to collect teddy bears and would donate them to the police station there. I did alot of little things to help others. I am planning on having my son do things like that when he gets alittle bigger. I think this Christmas we will go to the Nursing home and take little things and candy. They really do enjoy it. Some of them don't even have family that will come and see them.

That sounds really nice what you use to do and what you are going to do. Thank you for sharing. Yes, they do so much enjoy getting things. Many of them can not have candy for the sugar. They can have muffins and things like banana bread things like this. They also need things like lotion and other stuff. They have some good things in some places but not others. Also, as you said the police station and fire dept. gather things to help people. I give to them too. They have place for women and children of domestic violence. They need all personal things and the children need everything. Most of them when they leave home they have nothing but the clothes on their backs. The babies need diaper, milk, toys, and clothes. Children have their needs and so do the women. Just think what you use on a daily basis. They need everything.
