Are they bags or sacks? Sneaks, tennis shoes or tennies? What do you call them? | | | | Another discussion got me thinking about how different things are called by different names throughout the country and Canada. Grocery bags here in NJ are called sacks in Utah (and I'm guessing in the South, too - they share a lot of terminologies). Which do you call them and where? How about sneaks? We call them sneaks or sneakers in NJ, but when I moved to Utah, they didn't know what I was talking about when I went to buy some. I suggested that maybe they were more familiar with "tennie runners" and BINGO - I got my sneaks!! So, how about these? What's YOUR terminology? (Of course, newer terms are in play, too - running shoes, walking shoes, etc - all variations of the traditional sneaker.) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I've answered a similar discussion about submarine sandwiches, and pop, vs soda. I call a bag a bag, and a running show a running shoe. Some interesting discussions on here tonight. | | | | | | | | | | | | Logo Tote Bags - Free S/H Free Shipping. | | I call bags bags, and tennis shoes either just shoes or tennis shoes. Im originaly from california. I moved to texas about 5 years ago, then oklahoma, and now i live in memphis. Talk about major changes in just about everything lol. Everything in cali is fast paced, no matter where you go, further east and south you go the slower paced everything gets and words change for all kinds of stuff. My girlfriend I had in austin, flew to phoenix arizona and I drove there and picked her up and we drove back to austin. This was a Tuesday, we got into el paso on wednesday evening. She had a college class thursday evening, so we stopped at the tourist info center to look at a map to see just how far we should drive that night so we could be in austin thursday in plenty of time. Well we are there looking at a map, and a couple of older men come in and use the bathroom and they see us and come out. They walk over to us and immediatly im thinking ok what do they want, what are they going to try and do. They walk over and ask us if we are lost and needing help. Hell i was shocked lol. Nobody in cali helps other people unless you know them, you dont walk up to complete strangers and ask them if they need help. So its not only differences in names of stuff across the country its also a difference in attitudes and all that. | | | | | | | jerzgirl (3245)

| | Oh, believe me, I know what you mean. I suffered major culture shock moving from NJ to Utah. Then I moved to Arizona and really enjoyed the "do what you want, just don't hurt anyone" kind of atmosphere they had. Then back to NJ - and I revisited culture shock as well as confronting STICKER shock! I had never lived on my own in NJ before, so I was really shocked by the tremendously higher costs around here. But, I'm inclined to offer help myself, so I don't know if it's how I was raised or if I picked it up out West or what. It just seems to be the right thing to do when you see someone who you might be able to help. I drove through Texas on my way back here - apparently, I lost a lot of stuff from the top of my car. By the time I realized it, I had no idea where it was. I was pulled over in the shoulder of the highway that goes through Pecos with my kids and my cats and all our belongings stuffed in and on my little Suburu when a little truck and a little man stopped by to say, "Howdy, Ma'am - did you all happen to lose a pair of speakers?" I was drawing a blank, trying to go through my mind what was in the corner of the roof rack that was now missing. Then I remembered and gasped, "My STEREO!!!" He was so nice to tell us about it - to even suspect that it was ours. I drove back to where he told me he saw it and, yep, there it was. All the buttons popped off, but otherwise in one piece. I had to laugh - what else could I do? | | | | darkjedi (4347)

| | Wow that was really cool and nice of him to do. The very first thing I noticed in austin was that nobody ever honked their horns. Hell in cali when the light turned green and if you didnt go right away everyone started honking, including me, when I was in austin I was a stop light, the light turned green, the people in front of me didnt go, I of course layed on my horn, they all turned around and looked at me weird, the people in the other cars were all staring at me lol. Now I hardly ever use my horn. April of last year I went back to cali after 4 years to visit my parents and get my new car, they had bought a new one and gave me their old one, but yeah I know what you mean about reverse culture shock lol, I had been driving slower over the years and lots of other stuff, and damn it was like I had never lived there before lol. When I moved from oklahoma to memphis, even further into the south, wow you hear about racism in the south and all that but damn. I stopped at a gas station in a small town in arkansas to get gas. As I was walking out there was an older black woman and two teenagers coming in, I without thinking about it, since ive done it all my life, held the door open for them. She was surprised and said why thank you sir, the two teenagers were also surprised and said thank you sir. I said your welcome but it was weird how they reacted. Where im working there is a lot of black people, hell theres a ton in memphis itself lol, and im always surprised by stuff here that happens or how people think almost everyday, and ive been here almost a year now. | | | | | | | New: Sneakers up to -57% Compare prices now and pay up to 57% less on high quality Sneakers! www.Sneakers.news72.com | add comment | | | |

| | I'm probably not far enough from NJ to have too many different words. We use grocery bags, wear sneakers, and eat subs or hoagies...which are two entirely different types of sandwiches by the way. We call pizza, pizza, not pies. We drink soda. I can't think of any others at the moment but I'll think on it some more and come back if I think of anything! | | | | | | | jerzgirl (3245)

| | Yes, they're different, but I'd be hard pressed to know what it is - they're a very similar sandwich with very different names that most would think are interchangeable. | | | | foxyfire33 (5787)

| | Well, it might depend on the area but here subs are on thicker rolls and have more toppings. They're the ones that are more special orders...you get whatever you want basically, beyond the basics there's pickles, sweet peppers, hot peppers, black olives, and probably other things I can't think of right now. They also have hot varieties. Hoagies are usually just basic. The rolls are thinner. They get meat, mayo, lettuce and maybe tomatoes and onions. | | | | | | | Super cheap Laptop Bags Find Laptop Bags at Best-Price.com!
