Do you do your yard or use a service? What do you do and use?  email this discussion to a friend?

I will start off with why I used play in the rain. When I go out to cut my grass sometimes it rains or sprinkles and I just keep going if it's not bad. I enjoy the rain. My neighbors all look at me, they think I'm crazy I guess. I figure ole well, if they aren't interested enough to ask me questions then they don't need to know why I do what I do.
My neighbors are friendly to a degree. We all say hi and speak when we see each other.
I do my yard. I have a tractor and I climb up on it and go. I do not use the weedeater. I usually can not start it and it hurts my back to use it.
I can get really close to things with my tractor elimanating much of the weed eating.
My grandsons have been taught to use the tractor. I let them sometimes so they have something to do and I pay them for their work.
They do the weedeating too. As far as pulling weeds and things the children do that to earn money. They like helping me and I want to make sure they learn to earn their money.
I am in the process of putting in a stone patio, the children and I have been working on it. Needless to say it's been a long process.
I've been thinking of buying the bulldozer scoop for my tractor. I will probably get it soon.
My husband has been digging a pond, by hand with a shovel. I will also get a bucket scoop for the tractor and surprise him with that.

I love the japanese theme with flowers, wood, and structure. The ying and yang thing. I still have much to do to have the place the way I want it.
I have 6 acres w/ 3 of it where I can do it how I want other than the rest being wooded. I like it that way. We have many trails through it.

How is your place? What do you do with it or plan to do?

As I only moved into my home this March, I have yet to see what all is in my yard (besides a whole lot of broadleaf weeds). I'm still waiting for some trees to finish leafing out to be sure what they are. Once I know, I will decide what to add/remove from my back yard.

I would like to put in a small bricked pathway/area near the fire pit and possibly a small bush/tree. But this are things that will likely be on next years agenda.

I will be putting in some annuals just to fill in where the weeds are now. A friend was just over spraying the weeds so hopefully I will have plantable ground in a few days.

I plan to spend time this summer exploring ideas for backyard creations that apeal to me and see what I can modify for my smallish back yard.

Just moving is costly. It sounds like you have it planned pretty well. I am putting in a fire pit when the patio and walk it done, that is part of this project.
I watch those shows where the yard patrol goes and helps people fix up their yards. They pretend they have a citation for their ugly yards.
I also watch anything that will give me ideas and a how-to-do this or that.
Having a small yard is nice you can do so much with it. I have a ton of room here to do with.

I also love to play in the rain. My kids love it when on a warm day and the rain comes mom goes berserk and runs, plays, and dances in it. We do our own lawn as well and use a John Deere lawn mower. I have a wrought iron gazebo I call a people cage with vines and a rose bush growing by it. I have a couple of flower beds with irises and roses. I just planted 10 trees this year. I plan on trying to eventually add more flower beds, a natural stone path way to the people cage, lighting around the cage and beside the walk way, and a little man made pond. But I probably won't have the money to do all that, but I try to add little things when I can. We have about 6 acres but only about 1.5 is yard.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

Your place sounds nice. I love the iron gazebos. I want a gazebo and have not decided on which one yet.
I have about 1.5 acres that I have to mow, that I call the yard. I also mow the back field when I don't have the beautiful flowers out there. There are trees and paths. I keep paths mowed so we can walk back there. That is part of the 3 acres.

I am all about yard services. I pretty much pay people to do all that kind of stuff. I have one spot that is my garden for my roses that I grow, but the yard is taken care of for me. Granted I am one of those people that pay people to do stuff for me. Like change my oil, I know how but always get someone to do it for me. I think part of it is, I would not have a job if there wasn't a service to provide and therefore I like to repay the effort by giving others the opportunity to provide a service for me so that they to can have a job.

My that's a good way of looking at things. I'm all for helping out when I can.
I use to work on the cars, my health gets in the way of doing many things now.
If I could afford to I'd have the landscapers come out and get the place like I want it and then keep it up myself. I love roses, the home in California we had was adorned in roses all over the place.

My husband does all of our yard work. He's in the process of putting up a fence around our back yard right now. Our lot is decent size considering we live in town. It's not huge, but there is plenty of room for our dogs and our toddler to run around and play.

We just have a few trees, two sheds, and a playhouse in our yard. One shed is for regular storage, the other is for tools and things, since we don't have a garage here, like we did at the last place we lived.

We just moved here last summer, so we haven't really done much to the yard so far. I'm think I'm going to put a garden in, once the fence goes up. I didn't want to do it before, because the dogs would trample through it!

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

That's nice that your husband is handy around the yard. It sounds like even though you have a new yard you have plans for it.
I don't have a garage either and found that I too needed a building for extras and one for tools and working. You will have it like you want it soon enough. The first year moving in is hard because of the expenses in moving.
You have a darling child, smiling and happy too.

I go for the service. I always do that everytime we need the yard to be fix. My partner can't do it anymore because he has some problems with his body and no can do for me too. So I ask someone to do it, we have this somebody we call 'helper' at home.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

I'd like to have a helper sometimes. I did have at one time but he stoled all kinds of things from me. I was in a wheel chair for over 2 years and for some reason people just take advantage sometimes.
There are some things around here that I wish I had more help with. So I have to hire a service for fixing some things.

i do my own yard.i would quickly go broke if i had a service come in-too expensive.i've been having fun landscaping though,i've been putting in paths and whatnot.i really need to get one of those riding mowers eventually though.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

I know what you mean. I've thought about bring in a landscaper just to get te yard the way I want it. But there are better things this money could be used for.
I use to use riding mowers. They would go out on me every year or two. I have way to much for a conventional mower. I got tired of spending $900 to $1000 on mowers all the time so I went to the local tractor place and bought one.
Also, doing things in my yard myself makes me feel good. Just knowing I did it or with the help of the grandchildren on things we did that. It makes you feel good, or it does me. The aches and pains are worth it, lol.

myLot reputation of 99/100. scarlet_woman (11395)  4 years ago

you know,i had heard that.some of those mowers need constant maintenance.but then,my little push mowers
do as well..seems every other year i'm having to replace one.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

I have not had any problem with my tractor. I do regular maintence on it, keep the oil full, don't let the diesel get too low, and in geral just keep it up. As long as I take care of it I should continue to have no problems with it. Oh, I did have one problem, someone,( I won't name them) put regular gas in it instead of diesel and I had to have it fixed. I did not know about the gas until I had it fixed. So I don't really consider it was the tractors fault, but human error.

we have this huge garden and each week our landlord comes here and mows it...it takes him a few hours but he's here each week doing it...i know for sure that i could never do as much work in there as he does, he's touching 65 now and still has the energy with that mower....pic below of my garden....

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

aaah that's nice. I love the big tree. I love trees.
I know what you mean about the elderly people and their stamina. My grandfather was 85 and had more up and go that I do. He was stong as an ox. Some in the family wanted him to stop doing this, selling produce and whatever else he did. I told them and so did my mom that if he quit doing he would probably die.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  4 years ago

it's a cherry tree and each year we get an amazing crop...we use them to make wine...we also have peach and plum trees but they are still babies at the mo...i love our garden....

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

It sounds so nice. In California I had all kinds of tree and loved it. So I've put in apple trees and I have miniature peach trees. They yeild fruit and I love having them. I am always on the lookout for hardy things that will with stand our cold winters.
The wine sounds good. I have not had any made from fruits but then, I'm not much of a drinker. I bet they taste good.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  4 years ago

the cherry wine is very sour so i don't drink it much, it can blow your head off too...LOL....each year we collect them and ferment them in the cellar...this year the crop is not ready yet but i do love to give them to my grandson when he comes over, although if he eats too many he does get belly ache....we also want to plant some more fruit trees, like a victoria plum and some proper eating apple trees....the gaden is well big enough to ake at least 10 more trees...we have lost alot of trees over the years due to old age and disease so it's nice to replace them with fine strong newer trees....i also want to plant a strawberry patch along with black currants and blackberries....i could go on forever, but this is what i plan to do while i live in this house...as you can see on my pic, there's plenty of room...the square patch now has trees growing and the oak on the far right has all it's leaves, i took this pic around March time so everything looks a little bare...i have just grown another oak from an acorn so it will be ready to plant when it gets stronger....which will be pretty soon i hope...i want this garden to be full of trees, they are good for the environment

oooh I just love your house. It's is beautiful. I wanted a 2 story house, but my husband said you can't do the stairs. I didn't and still don't care. One of my plans is to add to my home. I want a basement.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  4 years ago

thankyou....this house has 3 floors, i just couldn't get the whole house on camera, well the front part anyway...inside is an amazing massive staircase and all the fixtures and fittings are the originals.....even the old dog claw bathtubs and brass taps....even down to the old light switches and ceiling roses...check out my post about my war time mural, it's still in my cellar/basement to this day...i have just posted it no more than 5 minutes ago...

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

I'm not familiar with wines. I have wanted to try and start drinking it with meals. I hear it's good for your heart to have one glass a day.

I do so much love trees and flowers. I was trying to grow an oak tree right in the front yard. My rotti thought it would make him a good throwing stick and just pulled it right up. It was only about 6 foot tall. I was heart broken. They take years to get big.
My rotti loves to play fetch. He also likes big sticks.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  4 years ago

awwwww pity about your oak tree and your rotti...bless him.., i am growing mine now and it stands about 6 inches so we have a long way to go yet...LOL...but we do have a fully grown one out there, i do drink wine but not that often, as i am not familair with it myself, but i do enjoy a glass or 2 if i am out...not too much though because it goes right to my head....LOL...

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

yeah, any alcohol goes right to my head too. It just takes a couple sips and I feel it. I guess I'm just nota person to go drinking with.

Well last month this guy that is married to this girl that used to live next door to my grandmother, he and this other guy cut our yard. If we did not have them, then my husband would use a riding lawn mower on our grass..

Instead you gave someone else the chance to make some much needed money.
I didn't let anyone on my tractor for a long time. I was the only one that used it. Now both of my grandsons know how to use it.

Not me. I rent a cabin from my grandpa, and my mom and step dad live in a house on the same property. If anything gets done, it's because my step-dad does it. He's an arborist (which is like a landscaper but much better.) so it all falls on him. I couldn't really care less.

myLot reputation of 98/100. moondancer (4017)   ranked 4 out of 354 in play in the rain  4 years ago

really, I care what my yard looks like. Not for the neighbors really but for me. I want a nice serene place to go out and relax in.
It's nice to have someone do it for you if you don't have to. But it's also nice doing some things yourself.
Thanks.
