|  Games consoles such as the Sony Playstation 3 can burn up to five times more energy than a medium sized refrigerator, a Choice study has found.
The consumer magazine found a Sony Playstation 3, switched on but not in use, could cost almost $250 a year in electrical bills, whereas a fridge would cost less than $50 a year.
Plasma television sets were among the top energy guzzlers, consuming more than four times as much energy as a traditional analogue set.
The average desktop PC, tested independently of its monitor, was third on the list of top energy consumers.
However, the PC's Apple equivalent, the iMac, an all-in-one model with a built-in display, used just two-thirds of the energy consumed by a monitor-less PC.
LCD computer monitors were found to use only about half as much energy as the older cathode-ray tube monitors.
The study also found that devices placed on stand-by can cost just $15 a year.

| |  Actually Playstations, plasma television or computer does not "BURN OUT POWER". Then why in the end of a month your electricity bill was so expensive? The reason is that device that you list above is a electronic power device. Electronic power device does not consume high power but it will cause harmonic. Most electricity transmission was using alternate current. An alternate current was in sine wave, when harmonic occurs, the sine wave will not be sine shape anymore. This will cause the meter does not read the rate of the load current properly and cause your electricity bill expensive.

| |  Actually yes i did. I recently heard even turning something off it still uses power. It doesn't stop using power at all unless you completely unplug it.

| |  well this is a very valuable information although i have a few doubts in few cases and i have to look for some other sources to cross check the info but this is a fact that now we should look to conserve the energy that we are using without much of use because it is very costly to the envirnment

| |  Its a good thing you post this Aussie we now have an actual figures of top energy guzzlers and prove that turning off a device is the right way of minimizing electric bill. Only one left for me the study that conclude about the benefit of an unplugged devise vs a turned off but plugged devise. We were thought way back that it should be unplugged, is it worth the effort?

It says that keeping it on "standby" only cost $15.00 a year.
The question is... "how many things have you got on standby?"
If you have 4... that's $60.00 a year.
Most people left their video recorders "On" for 20 years... not realising that a video recorder left "On" is the same thing than having your television turned "On". Because a video recorder is actually a television without a screen.
I have a DVD player which switch off automatically after 15 minutes if not in use. But my latest DVD recorder does not. I think it would be good if all those media appliances did switch off automatically after 15 minutes.

| |  that really interesting aussie.i have a son with the playstation,i inherited a hugh digital t.v,and i am always on the computer.i will have to learn to switch them all off and see if there is a big difference in the bills.cheers sue
