Do you keep betta fish in the same tank? |
| |
| I've always heard that betta fish cannot live together in the same tank unless it is a male and a female pair. The females aren't vibrant colors like the males, so most people have the male betta fish. One day last week I was in the pet store and saw two bright colored betta males swimming in a tank with other fish. I asked the boy working there and he said that they can live together if the other fish are slightly aggressive. I have never seen this before and always been told differently. When I went back to the store yesterday, neither of the betta's were in the tank. I don't know if they were purchased or moved (hopefully nothing bad!!) but I was wondering if any of you knew the truth? Can you keep them with other fish and can you keep two bettas in the same tank without a fight?? | | | | | |

| | There is no way to keep two male bettas in the same tank. They'll fight each other to death. Females on the other hand, CAN be kept in the same tank. Initially they will fight amongst each other to establish a pecking order. But eventually the order will be established and they'll be able to coexist. Sometimes though you get cases of repeated bullying. Then you have to seperate the female being victimized or it'll die. I've kept a group of about 15 females in a large 30 gallon tank before without problems. Males ALWAYS have to be seperated. | | | | | | |

| | I've always heard that they will kill each other if you have them in the same tank. I had two, and they were in the same tank but it was divided by a wall, but they could see each other, and they would swim up to the wall like they wanted to fight, their gills on their sides would flare out, it was wierd watching them. I knew if I had them together one of them probably would of been dead. I don't think you can keep them together. | | | | | | |

| | i am 99.9% positive that you CANNOT keep two male bettas in the same tank, no matter what other fish you have in there. and if the other fish are "slightly aggressive" that is dangerous to the bettas, because their fins make easy bully targets and will be quickly shredded!! bettas are very territorial when it comes to members of their own species. a male wants to be the ONLE MALE in his "area" (tank) that way he is guaranteed to get the girls lol! id bet my very last dollar that those 2 bettas were gone the next day for 1 of 2 reasons. #1 they killed each other (they WILL fight to the death) OR #2 someone with more knowledge about the species saw them going at it and seperated them from each and from the "slightly aggressive" fish in the tank. hopefully the second one happened. how awful would it be that they both died because some moron thought he knew it all?! | | | | | | |

| | Male Betta fish are very aggresive (hold a mirror up to their fish bowl or aquariam, watch them puff their cheeks). Male betta fish can live with no less or no more than 4 female Betta fish. Male bettas can also live with algee eaters or bottom feeders. They can't live with other male bettas ever!!!!! It is problay the best to keep male beta fish alone or get algee/ bottom feeders. I wouldn't suggest putting females with a male. Because if they mate, the mother of the babies is a canibal. She will eat her baby betas. Hope i helped, Peace Out Peeps! | | | | | | |
