I think the secret is repeat and reward and praise, I love watching that lady that trains dogs on TV she is so good and really thinks like the dogs, that is what you have to do think like them...so just think like a dog.

yes but if you give them repeat reward and praise wouldnt that lead it to believe it can do what it likes? i'd imagine you'd have to train it simular to the way you'd bring up a child but not the same way obvs =P like how would you toilet train a dog?

In all honesty the best way to decide what breed to get IMO is by answering certain things like How much room inside and outside do you have for a dog in order for it to be comfortable Do you have the time to take care of a high energy high maintenance dog or would you prefer a mellow lap dog how much do you have for food..obviously a larger dog will need more food which means more money What type of temperment do you want Do you have other pets? Do you have children? do you have the time to train a stubborn animal... ---------------- We have a Chow and Shepard mix and a Chow Lab mix...both of them trained like a dream BUT they are both stubborn (chow in them) and she is stubborn AND bold (he's a little scaredy cat LOL)...Regardless of the breed though, CONSISTANCY AND FREQUENCY IMO are the two biggest keys when training a dog...as well as being firm and ALWAYS making sure you remain the boss so to speak.... I'm sure others will have better advice for you but theres some from me anyway

You need to have a lot of time for a puppy. When I got my puppy (he is a shelter dog so he is mixed) he probably went outside 30 times a day. Praise is a great thing for puppies as well. I have a lab now and he is very smart, but I have also raised Dobermans as well. They were also extremely smart. Those are the only two breeds that I am very familiar with so I can't really comment on any other breeds.
