I had a little incident this past weekend with my daughter and the bathroom. She decided to take a bath which is great, however she somehow could not figure out how to switch off the water and proceeded to flood the bathroom, part of her bedroom, part of another bedroom, the entire den, part of the kitchen and part of my bedroom. Actually the den has wood floors and the kitchen has tile but the other rooms have carpet in them. Well I rushed and got out the steam cleaner and got my kids involved sopping up the mess on the wood and tile floors with towels and mops. After 6 hours of water extraction the carpet was still a little damp - it is hard to make carpet and the padding bone dry. Well, anyway the carpet was kind of starting to smell a little funky so I found a great way to get rid of the smell and disinfect and clean my carpet. Vinegar!! What you do is pour about 1/3 white vinegar to 2/3 parts HOT water. I just steamed the carpeting and then sucked it back up. The carpet did smell like vinegar for about a day but as it continued to evaporate and dry up the vinegar scent went away and now doesn't smell like anything. After the carpet was completely dry I sprinkled baking soda and then vaccuumed up. I believe that the vinegar also disinfected any bacteria that might have been in the carpet and probably inhibits mold, etc. I use vinegar for many other uses too. But I just wanted to share this friendly advice for anyone out there who might need it. Take care and have a great night! :D

That's great to know. I know I must have already heard of this before but have forgotten. So thank you for brushing up my memory. Our back room where we dry our clothes is the part of the house that easily gets wet and sometimes I worry about the smell coming out eventually. Thanks for posting it here. I should write it down in my little notebook of "Useful Tips" so I can refer to it later.
