Do you like myLot smilies (or do they annoy you)?

I love smilies and you can probably tell this as I tend to use them quite a lot in my posts. I was really excited when I reached the required number of posts to use them, (probably more excited than was really necessary!) However, I know that some people find them annoying and maybe I'm actually offending some people by using them so much! I try not to go overkill and don't use too many in each post, but I know that they are often seen as cheesy, twee, childish and maybe just a bit unnecessary. I would imagine that some people would also think that a discussion should speak for itself without the need for some silly cartoons to help you express what you think. What do you think about smilies? (I have tried very hard not to include smilies in this discussion. It was hard!)

I think they're a wonderful addition and wouldn't be sad to see more. It's so hard to judge tone on the Internet that smilies soften the blow - so to speak. They help convey meaning. Useful little things!

Yes, I agree. You can't hear peoples' tone as you would if they were speaking their responses so they are very useful. Thanks for answering.

I think they are great, and likewise I was rather excited when I reached the point of being able to use them. I don't think that they are at all annoying, I think it is nice to break up the monotony of just text sometimes, especially in a long response. I think they can sometimes be over-used, but I don't think we should take ourselves too seriously here on mylot, if it makes us happy we should use them. Thumbs up from me.

I like the smilies. I use them quite a bit because they allow me to convey what sort of tone my words are being used in. If I am teasing I can use this one If I am laughing over something I can throw a smile or laughing one up there. I try not to go overboard with them, but I really do think they help convey your state of mind as you type a response.

It's true, they are great for letting people know that you're teasing. A lot of times people might have thought I was insulting them if not for the smiley! I do worry that sometimes I use them to show people that what I'm saying is funny, whereas if it was funny then maybe I shouldn't need to use the smiley. Also, I might be highlighting something as funny when it really isn't that funny to other people, making me look a bit of an idiot . Never mind, it's not something I spend lots of time worrying about and I will carry on using them regardless .

I can't really use smiley's yet but i've noticed that they use codings instead of just typing :) or :( I think that they make discussions attractive and colorful.

Yes, me too. I still use :) or :(, or even :o) sometimes, as I like these too, but the myLot code smileys are more fun and colourful. Looking at your rating, I think you can probably use them now, so have fun!!

Personally, I love them. It's my personality, I guess. My father used to call me "The original smiley face." Anyone who can't stand them are the same people who can't stand bubbly, perky people. Me? I get wrapped up in the enthusiasm of perky people, maybe because I used to be one. My bones are getting kinda ancient now, so I'm not as perky as I used to be, but I can still enjoy it through other people. I use the smilies sometimes, usually when something else should be said but so hard to find the right words. Kudos for speaking your mind!

I'm glad you like them too. Yes, I think it's probably true that people who are enthusiastic like them best, although if you're not I suppose you could still use the more negative or less manic ones; I agree that they're very useful when you can't find the right words. A picture speaks a thousand words!
