I don't know if this story ran anywhere but here since it involved two local people.
Staff Sgt. Travis Twiggs had a strong commitment to the Marines, he enjoyed the Marines and flourished in the environment. However, multiple tours in Iraq brought out this young mans demons. While seeking treatment from PTSD, he left the treatment facility in Bethesda he left (the article in the paper stated that officials were unsure if he had a weekend pass or just escaped) to see his dying grandmother. He was missing a few days before being reported AWOL. While in town he met up with his brother. After visiting his family and his grandmother, the left town. They headed towards the Grand Canyon. They stole one car and attempted to drive it off the Grand Canyon. When that failed they stole a second car and were involved in a high speed chase. The police believe that Travis thought that the Iraq's were out to get him. At the end of the chase he killed himself and his brother (seems from what was going on that they did have a suicide pact).
The family is still in shock that they even had this plan.
Staff Sgt. Travis Twiggs left behind a wife and two kids.
For part 1:[i] It might have been just another honest showing of patriotic duty from the devoted Marine who loved his country so much he named his daughter America.

How many people need to get PTSD and not get the right treatment or kill themselves before our government wakes up?
Not horrified by this rate yet Check this out: "Internal emails from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) turned over to a federal district court in San Francisco this week reveal that the agency’s mental health unit saw a staggering 1,000 suicide attempts every month among veterans receiving government care last year. emails also indicated that among all US veterans, the VA was aware of a suicide rate of 6,570 per year, or 18 suicides every day on average."
