Best use for backyard | | | | I have 3 acres of land in an area that is being developed. Two of the acres are forest, and one acre is a slope with several large trees. How can I use those 3 acres to the best advantage? Wildlife habitat? beekeeper? windmills? | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | One thing you could do, to gather ideas, would be to contact a local gardening society and see if anyone would be interested in coming out and giving you some ideas. I don't know what your property looks like, but I can imagine a woodland garden in your forested area with lots of native plants, winding pathways, and a few seating areas where you can sit under the trees in the shade. You could use some of the open areas for orchards or vegetable gardening, if you fancy that and have a desire to start a produce stand or save what you harvest for your family and friends. You could even put in a pond. If I had three acres, I'd probably put in a nice, big cistern to collect water. We're in a drought, so that's important and will probably become increasingly important. I'd probably also consider a goat or two, maybe a cow. I hope you have tons of fun with your property! To determine what will use the land to the best advantage, you have to consider what you want, what you can successfully maintain, and what you're interested in pursuing in the future. | | | | | | | | Traycienelson (2)

| | I love those ideas. I don't think I'd ever go inside if I ever got my property to look like you described. And the goat and cistern are really great ideas that I never even thought of. I also think the local gardening society could help me find some native plants that would grow better than what I was trying to do. Thanks for the ideas. | | | | | | | No-Salt Water Softener Hard Water Conditioner & Descaler System. Free S&H. Now $179. www.equinox-products.com | add comment | | | |

| | What are you goals? Are you looking to go 'off grid'(I ask because you mentioned windmills), or are you wanting to be a habitat source? Your advantage or for wildlife? | | | | | | | | Traycienelson (2)

| | I am babystepping my way off the grid. So far I'm supplementing my energy use with solar panels, and I got my electric bill from $120/month to just $50/month. Since my house is on top of a very large hill in North Alabama, I thought maybe a windmill would be effective. I'm also quite concerned about the wildlife in my area because developers are moving in and building houses all over. Between me and the neighbors, there are 7 acres of undeveloped land, so we're trying to make sure some of the land stays undeveloped. I guess I really just want to be responsible with my area. Is there a way to benefit both? | | | | Irishfrndly65 (8534)

| | I would say, yes. The windmill sounds good on your location. Take a look at these 2 mags and you may find some answers to your questions. http://www.countrysidemag.com/ http://www.motherearthnews.com/ Both are excellent sources for just the type of questions that you are posing. We have 9+ and are leaving much of it 'wild'. Saves energy in several ways, mowing for one. ;) We are also looking into landscaping with native plants and doing away with a 'lawn' almost completely. We haven't anyone that we care about impressing with a large patch of plush green water sucking grass anyways. LOL! Also landscaping your yard in 'edibles' is a good option. Look into planting for feeding wildlife. There are many lovely berry bushes that birds and other critters can use for food and you get the enjoyment of the 'company' of nature. Hope you enjoy those websites, and good luck. | | | | | | | Home & Garden Businesses Find Home & Garden Businesses Near You With Local.com! Local.com | add comment | | | |
