finding out who an email address belongs to

Is there anyway I can find out who belongs to an email address w/o having to pay for it? Reason for asking is for personal reasons, but it's because I've been talking to someone for a year now and I just want to find out if the name he gave me is his real name or not. I have checked web-detective and the three email addresses he gave me were found, but in order to get the info I need, I have to pay for it. Anything anybody can do for me will be a big help. Thank you
