Eating a 10pound cake

I bought an ice cream cake today from Dairy Queen and while carrying it to the car, I noticed that it was a lot heavier than a normal cake. This got me thinking: IF I EAT A 10 POUND CAKE, WHY WON'T I IMMEDIATELY GAIN 10 POUNDS? After eating, I always feel heavier, but why is it that the weight of the food I eat doesn't match the weight I gain after eating? Digestion takes over 3 hours if I remember correctly, which means that the food I've just eaten won't be fully digested and should add to my weight. Does anyone know the phenomenon behind this?

We don't absorb EVERYTHING we eat. There is always a limit. However, I don't really know what it is. But you DID gain - just not everything. First because some of that will turn to crap, right? So you can't possibly have gained all 10 pounds. What you should really be thinking about is "calories". How much calories does a 10 pound cake have? Then that's how much calories you consume. And whatever else is attached to those calories :)

LOL If I even look at a 10 pound cake...ice cream or regular...I gain weight :) As to why you don't gain weight immediately, I'd think b/c as soon as you start eating and it reaches your stomach, your stomach starts to break it down...removing the liquids and absorbing certains parts. Unless your standing on a scale while your eating it, I doubt your going to notice anything and maybe not even then. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

The reason we do not gain as much weight as the amount of pounds in food that we eat is because of the amount of calories we tend to burn off in between the time of eating it, etc. as well. Could you imagine if everyone gained all the weight from the amount of food they ate? We would have a lot of people weighing easily over 1000 pds. in a yr. and then people would be dying just from gaining the weight so fast. So I am glad we do not gain all of what we eat, and as long as you did not eat the Cake all in one sitting it should be OK as well.

I am no expert but could it be the manufacturers of the cake did not state the correct weight on the carton? I know exactly what you mean though and it's weird. Just as well that we do not immediately gain that amount of weight - how would we possibly cope with all the extra?
