Help! How do I keep dogs away from lawn? |
| |
| In the past 6 months, it has been decided that the southeast corner of my lawn is a neighborhood restroom area for any dogs going by. This area is quite large and I've been noticing a lot more people walking their dogs in our neighborhood that aren't from our neighborhood. Of course, the humans aren't carrying any bags with them that I can see and from the evidence left behind, they're either not carrying the bags or not using them. The area, like I said, is very large. Our backyard is fenced in but not all the way to the street. So not only are people letting their dogs defecate along our fence but also right in our front yard, where it isn't fenced in. Our own dog goes barking mad when the other dogs trespass on our property yet I still haven't been able to catch anyone "in the act". One day, I did discover a woman with an extremely large german shepherd at our backyard gate. She was letting her dog stick it's face into the crack of our gate. My own dog was going insane, barking like crazy and growling. I don't know what was wrong with this woman, because she continued to just stand there at my fence and let her dog stick it's nose into the space. I told her the gate didn't work properly and that while we had piled up pieces of plywood and a lawn chair in front of the gate, I couldn't guarantee that my dog wouldn't get out. I then told her she needed to stay off of our property. The entire time I'm telling her this, she's just smiling away, saying "yeah" "ok" really slowly. I could see that she didn't have much control over her dog but that's no excuse to trespass on someone's property and purposely agitate another person's dog. I went in the house while she was still standing at the gate and she traveled to our front yard and let her dog defecate in our yard. I didn't discover this until a little while later. Nice, huh? I checked our local hardware store and they do sell something to spread onto your lawn to discourage dogs but it's expensive and it's a small bottle for the area I need. Also I would need to reapply at least twice a week. I can't afford this I just can't believe that so many people feel it's perfectly ok to come onto my property and let their dogs defecate right there in my yard and then they just walk away. It makes me even madder that these people aren't even from our neighborhood. I've seen them walk by with their dogs, so I know they aren't. Does anyone know an inexpensive way to discourage dogs from using my yard as their bathroom? I thought about maybe placing a sign up that says the lawn has been chemically treated and is harmful to pets? Please help! | | | | | |

| | We don't have a law applying to dog waste and our police dept is understaffed as is. I'm unable to catch any of them. I like the idea of the bushes...maybe this fall when the local places have their end of the season sales I'll be able to snag some. Until then yes, maybe the "no trespassing" signs will have to do! | | | |

| | If your dog is there they wont believe the chemical sign. Some people are so rude and dont care about others. Get a bb gun and when they get close you'll shoot. You have a right to protect your property. A bb gun stings it wont kill unless you pump it up a million times. Most dogs dont like loud noises. Just shoot in the air. I know this may seem a bit harsh but put down some little spikes-dogs wont like it and wont stand there with pain. Make your own with nails in a piece of wood. You can get some scrap wood and make a little fence for next to nothing. Good luck. | | | | | | |

| | LOL! I love the bb gun idea! Actually if I could catch them I was planning on using the garden hose. The little spike idea is good, except my kids play in that area...what about chicken wire, would that work? We'd have to pull it up to mow but it'd be worth it to me...I'm tired of stepping in poo! | | | |

| | I know what each of you are going through. I have the same problem around my neighborhood. I am so fed up with these people that I am ready to get out and fight each and every one of them in order to try and stop them from turning my home into their private little doggie toilet. We have no deed restrictions in our neighborhood, and developers have found out and are literally just raping our neighborhood. They are tearing each home down and putting up to ten homes in its place. These homes are townhomes, and almost every one of the people that move into these homes bring dogs-large dogs! We have two people in our neighborhodd with great danes in these townhomes. What is wrong with people. Have they lost all their common sense? These dogs are as big as a small pony! I have asked these people to stop walkikng their dogs through the front of my lawn to no avail. What I need is a person-walking-dog repellant. I have already tried telling them that I have pesticides and fertilizers on my lawn, but they don't believe this now and continue walkling their dog on my lawn. I was now thinking about getting out with a sprayer and showing them as they walk by that I am spraying pesticides on my lawn-maybe that will get their attention! My intention is not to hurt dogs, but I will not live in a sewer because of rude people. I will do what I must to stop these rude people from turning my home into their private little toilet! If that includes hurting their little pet, then so be it! I am fed up with these people. | | | |

| | I agree that they won't believe a sign about the chemically treated yard because of your own dog. I like the spikes idea. Is there any way you could put those little carpet tack strips along the outside edge and just train your kids to play away from the edges? The nails don't stick up very far in those strips, but they sure do sting! My grandparents used to put moth balls in their yard to keep dogs out. They also would pour bleach on the outside of garbage bags to keep dog out, but pouring bleach on your yard would ruin the grass and probably would not help at all. I have dogs and I keep them in my own fenced yard and they poop in my own yard. | | | | | | |
