Hie fightingspiri, I have gone over there last year in a group of 20 people with our local tour guide. When we reached there in Luxor, the Egyptian tour guide took us around and did most of the communications with the locals. Most of them are fluent in French too. The vendors and locals in the suburban areas mostly could speak basic English and you could communicate with them easily. It is far better when you reach to big cities like Alexandria and Cairo.

You would have fun there, it is worth it to go and, just minor problems like pestering from the vendors to buy their goods and food is ok. Try not to drink local water but bottled mineral water. And don't show too much cash around as the locals would think you have lots and they 'love' you a lot toohappy

Wish you a good trip and a wonderful time over there! The guides over there are all very educated in Egyptology and well knowledgeable. The guide that was in my tour was good but his attitude was too autocratic...lol

Cheers,

As with most countries in the world, you should anticipate that they will speak their own language, and not yours. This is natural, in fact, I'm sort of surprised you were expecting it to be otherwise. This should in no way deter you from visiting them. Many guides will speak English, and it'll give you a chance to learn a few new words in another language, too. It will surely enrich your experience. What fun is it to visit another country if it's exactly like home? Expect and embrace the differences that define those cultures! That's why you're going there in the first place, right? :)

I have some net friends from egypt and they have a very good English, I have heard all them learn english on high school, even they learn other languages as german and french, and I know a English teacher that is from Egypt and she told me that in the elementary school that she works for, there is not allow to speak other language but English, because it is a private school and their parents want their kids to have a very good English, so I don't think it is hard to communicate with them, maybe you should to try to make some online friends, so when you go there you will know some people and it will more easy to ask for help if you get lost or something.
