This is an essay I had to write about for a scholarship for the University of South Carolina. Just wanted yalls opinion.

Since September 11th, 2001, the criminal justice system has confronted new demands and conflicts between its obligation to uphold the constitutional rights of citizens and the neccessity for protecting the homeland. Some would argue that the meaning of justice must change to meet these new demands. Does the meaning of justice change with time, or does it remain the same regardless of time and place?

Questions: Does the meaning of justice change with time, or does it remain the same regardless of time and place?

Does it change? Yes. Should it change? No.

I believe that justice should remain the same regardless of time and place. But the ways that we use to get justice, or the path taken will always have to change as they have in the past. If we change our justice system to fit the time, then our system will be worthless. How can you obey the law if it is always changing, and you can just change the law to suite your own needs.

Hello Toledomark,

So, does that mean that the concept of the Constition as a 'living breathing document' is hogwash?

Hello Cobracar,

First, please allow me to welcome you to MyLot. I hope that you thoroughly enjoy your time here.

On to your post:

There is no quick answer to your question. The worlds of international intelligence and homeland law enforcement have mingled as never before, since 9/11/2001. Though, they should have done so from the onslaught of international terrorism in the 1970s.

9/11/2001 represents a very real wake-up call for the USA and the world. There are those among our global brethren who care none for people, or structure. They will destroy whatever is in their perceived way, to accomplish their percieved goal or agenda.

Prior to 9/11/2001 most Americans had no concept of terrorism. We beleived that the bulk of the world functioned as the USA does. Yes, we knew that there were pockets of discontent. Though, the fall of the Soviet Empire negated our concerns that the worst was possible.

Now, we are all acutely aware of how economics and politics blend. We now realize that countries in economic despair will sell, trade, or share technology or equipment that could 'rock the whole of humanity'.

During the "Cold War", our children huddled under school-room desks. Today, we effort ourselves to abandon the Pledge of Allegiance' in an effort to dis-quiet the concerns of those who might perceive 'God' an objectionable.

The meaning of justice has not change! What has changed is the comprehension of good vs. evil.

And, that's not to say that we (the USA) are always good. Rather, it means that we are only as good as our commitment to our guiding principles.
