As I'd been saying for quite awhile, predictions of the "death" of the Democratic party have been grossly exaggerated and that's evident in the newest Newsweek poll, released just tonight, which shows Obama now holds an impressive 15% lead of McCain nationally.

I would appear that the majority of Democrats have indeed rallied around their party's presumptive nominee despite claims they would remain divided and that many would turn to McCain. What do you think? It should be mentioned that Obama holds a subtantially larger lead than the last two Democratic nominees did at this point in the race.

I'm not surprised at all that Barack Obama is leading John McCain in the polls. The Republicans have underperformed and should not be rewarded for their efforts.
If George Bush, John McCain and Cheney had performed this way in the private sector, all three would either be in jail or would have been fired.
John McCain brings nothing to the table. He is past his prime.
Barack Obama brings fresh ideas to the table. Barack Obama's idea of "change" has to do with facing the following challenges.
Disabilities, Civil Rights, Economy, Education, Energy & Environment,Ethics, Faith, Family, Fiscal Responsibility, Foreign Policy, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Immigration, Iraq, Poverty, Social Security and Veteran Affairs.
He may not be able to fix all these problems, but at least he has them on his agenda. I don't think John McCain has the energy or will to deal with these issues.
Another reason for Barack's lead is the stupid smears of Obama by the right wing nuts. The American people are saying that they won't be fooled again by the "Swift Boaters". Look where they have gotten us over the last 7 years. Barack is too smart to be hurt and defamed in this fashion.

Thank you very much for the best response. My statement was true 4 months ago and it's true today.
The republicans should not be rewarded with another 4 years in the White House.
I only hope we can overcome all the hurt they have done to our country. It's so sad to see what's going on today.

I think that people are ready for a change. America has lost trust in Republicans possibly, thanks to the Bush administration. Not to mention McCain has no clue where he is even at physically let alone on the issues. It seems to me he is already starting a smear campaign over the race funding issue. I have a feeling that Obama is taking this race. It's very hopeful so far.

That is, if people pay attention to the issues at hand and eliminate the BS. One can only hope that the majority of people do that.

Hello Annie,
I welcome this opinion poll!
It's not news to anyone on MyLot who knows me, that I percieve Obama and McCain both as terrible candidates for the Office of the Presidency.
Though, the magnitude of the horrific changes that might well be on the way are, in my opion, far better attributed to the real culprit, the Socialist agenda, than to either American political parties.
Hubby and I are fairly recession-proof, as far as savings and employability. We're fiercely independent. If, when it 'hits the fan', Hubby & I have squirrelled away enough to live on, we have property to farm upon, we have viable skills to sell or trade with. Can you or others say the same, if this energy crisis really 'rocks our boat', and we end up in another 'Great Depression', are you prepared?

I'm not sure what this has to do with the Newsweek Poll but I think you already know you're very much in the minority, that the vast majority of people are not "prepared". I'd say for many it has already "hit the fan". My mother grew up during the Great Depression and she's often said recently that in many ways things are already worse now than they were then. I know there are those that will argue that anyone who isn't fully prepared and who hasn't squirreled away enough to live on has nobody but themselves to blame and I guess there probably is some tiny shred of truth to that in some cases. Everyone doesn't always make all the perfect choices growing up or as young adults, everyone does NOT have an equal opportunity to get a good education or to move somewhere where there are good jobs if there are none where they live. Sometimes "life" gets in the way. I've no doubt it's going to take a he11 of a lot to dig us out of this hole Bush and his Administration has gotten us into no matter what but I hope we get away from the policies that have sunk us so deep and find a return to common sense and compassion. I know these are just words and I have no research to back them up but I don't consider making health care affordable and accessible to everyone regardless of income as "Socialist". Our lives have been under the control of the big oil companies, insurance companies, mortgage companies and whatever other big corporation you can name and while I know we need businesses to provide jobs and I know every business is in it for profits and I have no problem with that, it's the corporate greed that I have the problem with and an Administration whose policies allow them to gouge the public in every way possible no matter who is destroyed in the process. I've seen so many small, locally owned businesses in my area go out of business recently and I've seen many friends lose their homes and it's really heart breaking because these aren't bad lazy people looking for hand-outs from anyone, they're hard working families who have always played by the rules and it's gotten them nowhere. Everyone wants change, myself included, but I'm afraid what we need is a miracle and I doubt anyone can give us that any time soon.
