No I don't think that we get the politicians we deserve 'cause we don't really pick the candidates who are paraded in front of us during election time.The rich and powerful usually get the politician they deserve we the people don't, all we get is shafted by those so-call politicians we deserve.

I think it all depends on where you live and what type of political culture you have. I think if you live in the Western World, the ansewr is yes, you do get the politicians you deserve. Although the Western World is primarily democratic in its institutions, you tend to get a situation where people have become apathetic towards politics and come election time, you get people who don't bother to vote because they feel that all politicians are the same bunch of crooks. HOwever, not voting has its consequences - the politicians who get into power are precisely the people who get in because they're people vote while you don't and at the end of the day, politicians get in because they're voted in.
Likewise, here in Singapore, we get the politicians we deserve because most of us are apathetic about politics. We've resigned oursevles to the "What to do, they always win" attitude. As such, the political elite consistently get into power without too much of a problem and stay there. Ordinary citizens are good at grumbling but not good at doing things. Of course, its hard because the government has done a good job in delivering the economic goodies and laws against organising public protest are hard, but it does not mean that your voice is not heard.
Politicians are like travelling salesmen. When they need your vote, they'll promise you the world. But once they're interest are satisfied, you as a voter become inconsequntial to them. So, if you want the politicians to hear you, its important that you make sure that you remind them of how they got their jobs in the first place.

Hello,Pkc! You know pretty well that most our politicians are corrupt,criminals and selfish.people vote them to power and soon after, they forget about their responsibility and duty,and start accumulating money by unfair means.so we can't get deserving politicians to lead the country to prosperity.thanx.

Hello bbsr13 You have rightly explained your views but not in all cases . Your views are applicable for 95% in India particularly but there are few finest politician in the county who are falling within the rest 5% category to whom you can rely. In America they elect their President amongst the country's finest educational institutions, whereas we in India are saddled with politicians of to put it politely considerably lower educational attainment. This is basic difference.Isn;t it time more and more well educated Indians stepped into the political fray.
