What the heck is that noise?

I have been staying up far too late. Nearly every night around 2:00 am, if I am in my room and awake, I can hear a noise that sounds like something being rolled across the floor, coming from next door. It repeats every few minutes for at least a half hour. I sleep in the finished basement, so the sound seems to be coming from the neighbors' basement. (It is a townhouse so they share a wall). I am dying to know what this noise is, but I am afraid to ask the neighbors. Would you?

Yeah..it doesn't bother me too much as I can wear earplugs, plus now that it is summer I have the fan on which almost drowns it out.

That's a good one!
I would think maybe it's some kind
of exercise equipment bumping the wall.
Maybe? I don't know if I would ask.
But you could let them know that the sound
is waking you up.
They might care enough to stop.

Hmm yes I guess it could be exercise equipment. It seems pretty late to be exercising, but there is a kid that is either in high school, or just finished, so it is entirely possible. When he was a little younger I used to see him on a skateboard, and at first was thinking he was skateboarding in the basement! lol
It isn't really waking me up, as I am usually still awake, or else using earplugs, but I am so curious. But you know what they say about curiousity...

I know, it is bizarre. But, I don't think I explained, my bed is in the basement, so maybe it sounded that way because the pipes are underground, and probably not that far from my head!

I would investigate but under the pretense that it is waking you up. It may be the neighbors exercising machine, or maybe a pet of there's doing something? I can't be sure what the noise could be but it wouldn't hurt to invesitgate! Just don't overstep your boundaries, I don't think you would! Have a Great day

Well I hope that you find out what's making that noise. If they have two small dogs they could be sliding something across the floor and playing during the night. We have two small dogs and they sometimes like to run through the house.

I suppose when my curiousity finally gets the better of me, I will go ask them, using that excuse that it wakes me up. They do have 2 little dogs, but unless they're skateboarding in the basement, I can't imagine how they would be making that noise! lol Thanks and you have a nice day too.

That would drive me crazy, having pets making noise in the house during the night. When I went to visit a friend and slept on her sofa, her cat jumped up on the sofa about an inch from my face, in the middle of the night. I didn't sleep much that night! lol

if i were you give them about 3 nights. if the incident repeats itself you can ask your neighbors. you see, any uncertainy in anything means that we hadn't done our part. everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. in this case your neighbor's insensitivity. if on the third night this repeats itself you can always ask them good naturedly in the morning what it is. as long as you treat them as a friend you'd do fine. it would reflect in your voice. however, if you think they're nuisance then it would also reflect in your voice. good luck!
