All I can tell you is don't use cat/dog poop. It needs its own compost pile. Cat poop contains a bunch of ammonia (like their pee) and so yeah, you don't want that! It's organic, but not in a "plant your seeds in this" sort of way.

If you're in an urban area, it's recommended to rinse out egg shells. No seeds. Try putting used tea bags in the pile to "nourish" the compost. And NO MEAT!

You can do your composting in plastic bins like storage bins. We are starting one in one of those. Drill small air holes in it and start it with brown matter (premade store bought compost or dead leaves stuff like that) then start layering with green matter (veggie scraps, fruit scraps, egg shells, coffe grounds tea bags etc.) you can even put shredded paper (black and white only no color paper) in your compost. get some worms (red wigglers) and put the lid on. continue to add to it and flip it over once a day. Make sure you put it in a warmer spot of the house and you are good to go. You don't need land or even a lot of room to compost.
