Philippines my Philippines | | Please do read this my countrymen.. As you know, we have plenty of Koreans currently studying in the Philippines to take advantage of our cheap tuition fees and learn English at the same time. This is an essay written by a Korean student,(Never mind the grammar; it's the CONTENT that counts ). Maybe it is timely to think about this in the midst of all the confusion at present... MY SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES Jaeyoun Kim Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines . Do you really think the corruption is the problem of the Philippines? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines . Let me first talk about my country, Korea . It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed after the Korean War, and we had nonatural resources. Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia . We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father & brother also died because of famine. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism. Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism. 40 years ago, President Park took over the government to reform Korea . He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience. In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park . They asked to him, "President, when can we be well off?" That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea, and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to Korea . So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea . He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart. Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help developing country because they wanted their country to be well off. Though they received very small salary, they did their best for Korea . They always hoped that their children would live in well off country. My parents always brought me to the places where poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we have to love our neighborhood. And, I have loved my neighborhood. Have you cried for the Philippines? I have cried for my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many poor people. I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me sad in the prison were the prisoners who do not have any love for their country. They go to mass and work for Church. They pray everyday. However, they do not love the Philippines . I talked to two prisoners at the maximum-security compound, and both of them said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life in other countries and never come back to the Philippines . Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood. The owners of factory and company were distributed their profit to their employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved money for the future and their children. When I was in Korea, I had a very strong faith and wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines, I completely lost my faith. I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable situations in the Philippines . Street kids always make me sad, and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia, but there are too many poor people here. People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed. My parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation. They told me that Korea was much poorer than the present Philippines when they were young. They are so sorry that there are so many beggars and street kids. When we went to Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a boat because it would fun. However, they were not happy after taking a boat. They said that they would not take the boat again because they were sympathized the boatmen, for the boatmen were very poor and had a small frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But, my parents did not enjoy it because of love for them. My mother who has been working for Catholic Church since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without changing ourselves, we are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for them because all of us are same and have received a great love from God. I want Filipinos to love their neighborhood and country as much as they love God so that the Philippines will be well off. I am sure that love is the keyword, which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once. It should start from person. Love must start in everybody, in a small scale and have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world. Please love your neighborhood and country. Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the Philippines, there is God for people who are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love. If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines . Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country. You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others. That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

Our educational system (at least in my time, throughout grade school and high school) did instill in us love of God and love of country. As I was reading this, mixed emotions ran through me, most probably because I am in a crisis situation involving my daily life and my neighborhood. The crisis, I know, will pass, but your Korean friend's words and thoughts, I shall carry with me forever: There is God who is crying for love.

| | 2. everlasting (10034) | 4 months ago | I have been telling this to anybody who cared to listen but I guess they just stare at me! I love my country and this is the reason why i did not go to the US to join my parents. I did not even try to apply for work overseas although there are invitations for me. 1. Pardon my beliefs if it will step on yours but I think being a catholic and narrow minded at that is one of the factors why we act this way. We have been colonized for so long that we still have those hangups and that everything western is good, beautiful and true! Just look at those large billboards on whitening products! Can't we be satisfied that we have this complexion? 2. We lack nationalist leaders and most of what we have are a$$ kissers to the US. Where can you find a developed country that makes english as a primary medium of instruction, only inthe Philippines. We develop our people to be slaves of these multinational firms and other developed countries instead of training them to build this country great again. 3. Our businessmen are so greedy that they are destroying the hands that are feeding them. The low salaries and the idea that the workers will just lost their jobs if they ask for more pay is ridiculous! How will these people buy their products if they have no money and that the salary they received is just enough to pay for their transportation to go to work. Inviting foreign investor is not the solution to our economic problem because these investors bring their profits here to their country and with low salaries to their employees, how in the hell do they help us? 4. the best teachers in our country are either working as maids or teachers overseas. Some of what was left were those who are not gutsy enough to teach, to instill in our children what is true, just, and very Filipino. Some are not even eqipped to teach intellectually much more teach nationalism and love of neighbor. I could go on and on but this will go on deaf ears. the kids of today are greedy, self centerd and unconcerned. Where are the hope of our motherland?

What we have are egocentric politicians who only think of themselves rather than serving the Filipino people and their country. I agree that change should begin in ourselves. But when will we achieve it if the ones who leads us are the ones who grabs every chance every Filipino deserves to alleviate from poverty. I love my country very well. There are so much to be proud of.

To me, it is a simple and sincere reminder that the Filipino is not alone in wanting all that is good and right for our country. Perhaps, in our own small ways, we can make a difference to have a better life for the Filipino, and maybe inspire others to do the same. Thanks kaezy, and to your friend too.

It touches me deep inside but it hurts me because its is the truth. It really saddens me when the stigma or our own country were seen by others and yet Filipinos were still unable to see that. Even though living here in the Philippines and experience and suffer the bad and the worst situation Filipino's have I still find myself to love the country itself but not the people. I know this sounds bad but like other respondents say, lots of people are corrupt and almost all the leaders we have are too egoistic which is the number one behavior politicians shouldn't have. yes, blaming others won't do anything good but I think this is one way that people can suppress the true hatred they have to all the alligators in the senate. I thank you for posting this and yeah like what others say i hope that lots of Filipino can read this.

| | | | 8. kissie34 (709) | 4 months ago | The essay is very true... We Filipinos, we are always used other people since we don't want to confess our own sins. We keep on blaming other people fault but we don't blame our own faults. I think each one of us has its own problem and fault why our country are not growing due to we are just thinking ourselves. We are not thinking about our neighborhood, we are so selfish that we don't think our own country. We keep on blaming the people in the government for corrupting our money. Maybe yes, we have the rights to blame them because they are the one who should do something for our country. However, one or two people are not enough to carry all of us. We need to help each other so that we can survive. Honestly, in our situations right now most of us want to go abroad since their salary is too high not like here in the Philippines it is very low. I am working in a Hotel company, my salary is about 10k a month but I don't get exactly 10k, I just get 8,000plus since there are so many minus for tax and so on... If there are a million of people who are working and we are going to multiply it by the minimum tax paid, it cost a hundred of million pesos. However, the government says there is no budget. How come there is no budget, when the entire employee is paying tax? I just really hate how the government officials leading our country. They are just corrupting our money. But then we cannot do anything. We need to join force so that we can survive in this kind of situation. We need to love each other as what the author of the essay said. Yes, she is right. We Filipinos don't love our country since we do not love our neighborhood. How come can you say that you love your country but then you don't help your neighbor? Filipinos need to realize and be mature to think of what is really happening in our society today. We need to open our mind, ears, and heart for us to be aware of. I think the best thing that we can do is just to help one other and to love one other. But before we can do that, we need do it first to ourselves.

I truly agree with you that there was a time that our country the Philippines was at top as compared to other countries in Asia. Unfortunately through the passage of time, we are now far behind. I think it would take some time to bring back the status we were once before. But if we do not have the discipline, then we will continue to fall. God save the Philippines!

| | | | 10. knight_rlc26 (334) | 4 months ago | yes, i agree to the poem of that girl... It is hard for us filipinos to achieve our country's success because of us. Although we are catholic in nature but, we are lacking of oneness to achieve our goal for success. That, some of us has this crab mentality attitude that they do not want others to achieve success. It this often happen to us in individual level, what more in national level. That, sometimes we stand i different principles and we clash. we filipinos are intellegent and resourceful. We are able to withstand trials and difficulties in lives but, sometimes we contradict... this is our weakness... ive been to abroad too... and e thsame us the reaction of that korean... at the same time, we lack patriotism because we want to have a good life in the other part of the globe. Able to uplift our family status in the society and provide there needs that our country cannot suffice... therefore, i think this are some of those loopholes why we dont achieve our countries progress...
