Check out this video: http://video.hsus.org/index.jsp?fr_story=27958d7bf4de8b77094613009f55724b2db7ed61 If you listen to the last 2 minutes tow things are stated: 1. That prior to the meat recall there was a loop hole that allowed SOME downer cows to be in the American food system 2. This loop hole HAS NOT been closed. Downer cows are still being used in the food supply and in the school food program So, per the USDA some downer cows are okay to consume. Personally, I am not okay with this.

I don't even need to see the video to know this. My ex-hubby worked at a meat processing plant. The downer cows were brought in at the end of the day. The meat was put in "holding" while some tests were done but usually was processed like normal the next day. I doubt many extensive tests can actually be done within 24 hours so I will not buy ground beef from that company (thats what all the downer beef was used for there). It was pretty disgusting what went on there and the parent company has had many recalls as well as the local plant.
