On singing OUR National Anthem in Spanish

United States
July 1, 2008 2:59pm CST
I'm sorry, but after hearing they want to sing OUR National Anthem in Spanish - enough is TOO much! NEVER did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish-Celtic, German, Portuguese, Greek, French, or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key (in English) and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts gave a translation that's NOT even close. Sorry if this offends anyone, THIS IS MY COUNTRY! Would you allow me to come to your country and then allow me to demand that you sing your National Anthem in ENGLISH? And, because I make this statement DOES NOT mean I'm against immigration! YOU ARE WELCOME HERE IN MY COUNTRY Welcome to come through like everyone else has: O Get a sponsor! O Get a place to lay your head! O Get a job! O Live by OUR rules! O Pay YOUR taxes! O And LEARN THE LANGUAGE LIKE ALL OTHER IMMIGRANTS HAVE IN THE PAST!!! And please don't demand that we hand over our lifetime savings of social security funds to you to make up for ''your'' losses. If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone, then YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM! When will AMERICAN'S stop giving away THEIR RIGHTS? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards not to offend anyone. But it seems no one cares about the AMERICAN that's being offended! WAKE UP America! If you agree - pass this on! If you don't agree - delete it

If I'm so "wong" about English, would you mind "kearning" to type it? :) I mean, if you're so adamant about English being preserved and respected, you may want to stop butchering it via your keyboard. Also, if you want to preserve English, move to England. P.S. Watch the movie Casablanca. You will love the scene where everyone in Rick's Cafe sings their respective national anthems at the Nazis. It's fun!

How do you feel about people performing the national anthem with ASL (American Sign Language)? How do you feel about instrumental only versions? You have been surprisingly avoidant of me, and only responding to those who agree with you. It is clear you only want to hear the point of view which takes one blind side.

So I guess then you have no problem with people who move here and refuse to learn the language than beeeckie? If we are going to have to change our language to Spanish to accommodate the Mexicans shouldn't we also have to learn every other language of every other immigrant in this country? Why should she bother responding to you when you called her names and made fun of her?

ASL is the same language. It is English. Therefore, hearing impaired folks have the same ability to perform the anthem.

I agree with you Rev. There is NO POINT in singing the Star Spangled Banner in any other language BUT English! If one is an immigrant, you are expected to TRY and assimilate and KNOW the language of YOUR NEW COUNTRY! Assimilation means blending into your new culture which naturally includes language. If people refuse to assimilate, I think they should NOT be citizens.

Well, I'll never ever sing it in Spanish. First of all I don't know the language and lately have come to disrespect it and the people who come here refusing to learn our language. Not to mention the millions who are here illegally and not paying into the system but taking from it.

If you go to a country, and the main language is English you sing the national anthem in English. I live in Canada, and our main languages are English and French, yet the only places they speak French are parts of Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, and parts of New Brunswick. Where I live, we only sing it in English. By the way, we have people here who came from the Ukraine, the Phillipines, etc. and they all sing our national anthem in English. For that other person it is not racist. What would it be like if you were at a baseball game, and everyone got up, some sang it in English, some in Spanish, some in French, some in Urdu, some in Hindi, some in Manderin, some in Cantonese, and other languages. It would be a mess. Just close your eyes and imagine how confusing it would sound. It might make you, the other person, feel wonderful that America is a diverse country, but it would not longer be America. Now just think of doing business with someone who does not speak English and refuses to learn it. Do you expect all your neighbors to learn your language, and not only that but the language of the next business owner, and so on? When my father's family came from what is now Moldavia , they spoke German and my aunt told me when I went to visit her, she told us that father told them that now that we are in Canada, we should learn English. So if one comes to the States, one should learn English.

Mom always told me 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do'. Mom was right. You come to America - you learn English and guess what music seems to make it easier to learn. Do you remember something you read or studied many years ago...probably not...but you hear a song you have not heard in 20 or 30 years and the words come right back (for the most part). Yes, they should learn English, there are enough places that teach ESL that they should be able to find a place and do it. If I went to another country to live, I would expect to adapt to the country and the culture not the other way around.

Oh I see you have been labeled a racist an a xenophobia. I love it when people use such big words to make themselves sound so smart. This country is an English country sorry about that folk, I know that offend some people out there. What is the point of singing the national anthem in any other language but the langauge of that country. I would not demand that the Mexican national anthem be sung in English, so why not the same respect for ours. I am tried of having to change everything just for those people that refuse to adapt to our culture.

Actually, the United States does not have an official language. If the national anthem is detrimental without the lyrics, why are there often instrumental arrangements without words? I have the utmost respect for Francis Scott Key, and even more for his relative, F. Scott Fitzgerald. But I don't think when he was writing the song did he intend it to become the national anthem, nor did he expect it. He wrote it in reaction to seeing battle.

Wha's the friggen problem, here? In Canada we sing O Canada in English and Frenh!!! (Happy Canada Day, BTW July 1st 1867 my wonderful country was born) and in the Soviet Union their anthe was translated into about 15 different languages. As long as people are singing, that's all that should matter. If it really burs you, learn the Mexian anthem, in English!!

I have to say NO WAY TO THIS TOO !!! It is the principal of the thing. When you go to a Foriegn country you have to learn the language (whether native or not) to be able to survive there. The National Anthem is the USA song sung in English. If I moved to Mexico or Spain or Canada, I would have to learn Spanish, to be able to function in their Country. I don't believe they would change everything over there for me, people from other countries should learn to conform to our ways and languages just as I would have to conform to theirs. We are already writing directions and ingredients in differents languages . Give us a break, our money is going back to their countries, to their families and our people here are starving. whats wrong here?

This post is somewhat inflammatory. I believe that people have a right to sing in whatever language they want to. I wish that they would accurately translate the National Anthem to other languages to avoid mistranslations and misunderstanding. However, I would also like to point out that English is not the official language of the United States. It makes me angry that somehow what starts as about the National Anthem turns into a rant about immigrants as a whole. What does paying taxes or social security have to do with the National Anthem at all. I believe that it would be beneficial for everyone to learn the language of the location they live. If they do not, it will be more difficult for them, but the rest of the country is not obligated to adapt for them. In short, my opinion is sing the National Anthem in Spanish if you want as long as it is an accurate translation, just don't expect me to sing in anything other than English.
