I think a doctor shall never reveal his/her patient's situation to anybody except for the patient and the patient's very close and direct family members. But if the doctor really makes such a mistake, do you think he/she deserve a punishment? I think so. As the disease case is so personal and the doctor shall keep it like a secret and not let other irrelevant people learn it.

If a doctor tells others about your situation, he/she should be banned from practicing medicine.Somethings are private. And if no one can trust their doctor, most would stop going.

There is privacy regulation in USA (HIPA-Health Information Privacy Act)
It establishes regulations for the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI). PHI is any information about health status, provision of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to an individual.
Yes, doctors who reveal patient information should be punished.

Oh yes. I think it is very unprofessional and unethical to speak with someone else about a person's health. I don't think that would happen much around here. The doctors are too afraid of being sued as it is. I even had to sign papers along with Mom at one time so they could discuss her health with me and she is elderly with mental health problems.

Hi youless! I do agree with you. The patient's case should be confidential and can't be discussed to anyone unless it is for medical reasons and with the permission of the patient. It is the right of the patient and privilege that her condition be confidential. If the doctor will discuss the patient's condition aside from the patient or the family, he/she can be sued for that.
Take care and God bless!

Their professional ethics and morals really restrain them from revealling the the medical conditions of patients to third parties, but here in Africa, especially in my country Doctors are not professional-they say things that they should not be sayng and I think they need to be punished.

its little bit confusing cause in one side the doctor still human being which normal to make human error, but due to their assignment they bounded with doctor promise's related with patient. you can say about ethic code.
about punishement in this case, i think its better determined by the people who have responsible more about this matter

doctor's are ethically bound not to reveal anything about a patients condition to any one.they can be deregistered if they do.patients can sue them for breech of confidentiallity if they divulge any medical conditions to some one the patient does not want them to know.well thats the way it is here.cheers sue

Hey, youless, I agree, it's a personal affair, she/he shouldn't let this out. That's not fair for the patient.
